Letter From the Directors

Child neurology today is an exciting field, with incredible opportunities for intelligent, motivated and compassionate physicians. It is difficult to imagine a specialty more important to the future of society with our unique privilege to care for children and their developing minds. As advances in neuroimaging, neuromonitoring, medical and dietary treatments for neurologic disease, and genetic testing and therapeutics continue to evolve, more children with neurologic disorders are being diagnosed and cured at a rapid pace. Matching these advances, a large number of researchers, medical students and pediatricians are joining the field of child neurology.
Here at Johns Hopkins, we are committed to train the next generation of child neurologists in this era of transformation of pediatric neurologic care. Between our faculty at Johns Hopkins and Kennedy Krieger, we have a very large faculty dedicated to teaching physicians not only to be competent and compassionate clinicians, but also to be leaders in research, medical education and advocacy. Led by Division Chief, Dr. Catherine Chu, a leading physician-scientist in pediatric epilepsy, our deeply talented faculty includes national leaders in the child neurology at Johns Hopkins and beyond, including several prior division chiefs – all of whom are active in teaching and mentoring our residents.
The busy clinical rotations are balanced by substantial elective time for clinical rotations (at Johns Hopkins, Kennedy Krieger, All Children’s Hospital or other locations!), global health experiences, advocacy endeavors and basic and clinical research experiences, made possible by the large number of residents at a given time. Many of our graduates have gone on to become chairs of departments, directors of residency programs and leaders in the field, including many who have stayed here at Hopkins as faculty. Some of our graduates work for FDA, NINDS and industry as well!
Our program offers residents experiences in all aspects of neurology, with our close ties with the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery as well as the Kennedy Krieger Institute. Specialty training after three years of training exists in nearly all subspecialties, including epilepsy, stroke, critical care, neuromuscular disease and many other fields. We match four categorical residents per year to create a close-knit program, yet with enough residents to ensure an appropriate workload and coverage.
We take pride in our comprehensive and enjoyable residency program in child neurology. We have both trained here personally, and we are strongly committed to use our experiences to keep the program one of the best in the United States. Come visit us in Baltimore and see what our program has to offer.
Sincerely,
Eric Kossoff, M.D.
