The Research Pharmacy/Investigational Drug Services (IDS) Shared Resource supports inpatient and outpatient clinical research for the SKCCC by collaborating with the research teams, research leadership, and key stakeholders. This SR provides comprehensive pharmacy services to support the Johns Hopkins Medicine strategic priority to “push the boundaries of science and education”.

The SR staff consists of a Pharmacy Division Director, an Operations Manager, four Clinical Research Pharmacists, one Clinical Decision Support Pharmacist, two Certified Pharmacy Technicians and one Certified Pharmacy Technician/Inventory Specialist. Pharmacy support is available to investigators and the research teams for patient care services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The highly trained staff provide contemporary pharmacy services to support SKCCC investigators with protocol development, preparation and management of inventory, management of drug shortages, adaptation to unexpected workflow challenges and other opportunities.

SR staff participate in the development and maintenance processes for electronic systems (Epic, Vestigo®) used to support clinical trials research; participate in and conduct quality assurance activities (including the development of standard operating procedures), in collaboration with oncology leadership, internal and external monitors and other key stakeholders.

Education and training to pharmacy staff members, pharmacy students, and pharmacy residents who provide care to SKCCC patients, while promoting continuous professional development of Research Pharmacy staff, is a priority function as well as incorporating current best practices into daily operations to ensure safe and effective care for SKCCC research patients.

The Research Pharmacy/Investigational Drug Services (IDS) SR staff maintain compliance with regulatory bodies (Maryland Board of Pharmacy, United States Pharmacopeia Chapter pharmaceutical sterile compounding regulations, United States Pharmacopeia Chapter hazardous drug handling regulations, and with state, federal, and JHM IRB for the conduct of research).
