The Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center Office of Cancer Research Training and Education (CRTEC) supports grant-writing training activities at all levels. The curriculum and supportive services focus on accelerating the success of independent funding for trainees and junior faculty.
Biannual Grant-writing Workshops
Each year, the Office of Cancer Research Training and Education offers two types of grant-writing workshops:
- Workshop for NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service (F) Awards. This workshop is open to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and provides material on how to draft and prepare a successful application.
- NIH Career Development Award Workshop. This workshop is open to senior post-doctoral fellows and faculty will provide information on writing successful K-grant applications. Information on successful research projects for both K-awards (e.g. K01, K08, K23) as well as RO1s for junior investigators will be provided.
Internal Grant Review Committee
This is a standing internal grant review committee that supports grant submissions and resubmissions. Members relevant to the applicant’s topic may also be added ad hoc. Chalk talks for prospective grants may also be reviewed by this committee. Committee proceedings are provided in writing, and this internal committee will support grant applicants in preparing responses to critiques.
The Office of CRTEC maintains a library of successfully funded grants that may be used for educational purposes.
New Training Grant Applications
The Office of CRTEC provides input and support for new training grant applications in areas related to cancer research training (e.g. R25 and T32). Resources include examples of successfully funded grants.
Writing Groups and Junior Faculty Grant Writing
Junior faculty grant-writing working groups meet regularly, and often are led by senior faculty who work with faculty to provide feedback and input on grantspersonship and navigating the NIH system.
Biostatistics support for grants is available through Oncology Biostatistics services.
