A member of the executive leadership team of Johns Hopkins Bayview, Dr. Smyth holds strategic responsibility for nursing, education and hospital capacity management. Dr. Smyth also leads several health system initiatives related to integration and was most recently the accountable leader of the supplemental staffing unit and co-director of the Capacity Command Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Smyth served as the chief nursing officer for the Baltimore Convention Center Field Hospital. -
Michelle D'Alessandro, DNP, RN, NEA-BC
Senior Director of Nursing for Medicine and Maternal-Child Health
Dr. D'Alessandro leads the oversight of the nursing teams for the Departments of Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pediatrics. She is responsible for the operational outcomes of 200 inpatient beds across three general medicine units, three intensive care units, the intermediate care unit, maternal-child health, the combined pediatrics unit, addiction medicine unit, observation unit, cardiac catheterization lab and endoscopy. -

Senior Director of Nursing for Emergency Medicine
Barb Maliszewski is responsible for the integration and standardization of adult emergency care across the main emergency departments, helping to ensure effective patient care throughout the institutions and departments. She will also explore innovative approaches to clinical care that are patient-centered, cost-effective and evidence-based. -
Cynthia Walters, DNP, RN
Senior Director of Nursing, Hospital Capacity Management
Dr. Walters leads nursing for hospital capacity management at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview. In this role, Dr. Walters manages patient flow and throughput for both JHH and JHBMC, aligning and harmonizing processes to provide greater efficiency and access. She also co-leads the Capacity Command Center with Jim Scheulen, Johns Hopkins Medicine’s chief administrative officer for emergency medicine and capacity management, working to evaluate and refine current capacity strategies.
