Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Center

The Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Center at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center is committed to providing comprehensive and compassionate care for children with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and indeterminate colitis. Our expert pediatric IBD team specializes in the treatment and family-centric care of children with IBD, and will include you in the process from diagnosis through the long-term management of these diseases.

About the IBD Center

The IBD center is the only children’s clinic in Maryland that has a focus on very early onset-IBD and it was among the first to perform fecal microbiota transplantations for children with IBD who have recurrent C. difficile infection.

Our specialists see hundreds of patients each year and have considerable expertise in biologic agents and nutritional interventions for pediatric IBD. We routinely provide second opinions for children in the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond.

What to Expect

When a child is diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis or indeterminate colitis it can be a very scary and confusing time. We are here to provide you with support and cutting-edge care.

Once your child is diagnosed with IBD it is beneficial for them to have clinic visits between every 3 to 6 months, depending on the recommendations of your GI provider. At these visits, you and your child will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns that you may have. We will closely assess your child’s response to medications, growth/nutritional status and overall wellbeing. As a part of this assessment, we often request outpatient blood work and imaging studies which can often be done at locations close to your home.

Your child’s primary care provider should continue to follow him/her on a regular basis. We will make sure that he/she is kept up to date about your child’s IBD by sending a letter to that provider after each GI clinic visit.

Ulcerative Colitis: Kim's Story

After years of worry, Kim finally finds Dr. Maria Oliva-Hemker who helps diagnose her with severe ulcerative colitis and ultimately lives a healthy life without her colon.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research

We have active clinical trials for children with IBD and are part of active research consortiums in North America. Research studies enable us to look for possible causes of IBD, learn more about the inflammatory process, improve a patient’s quality of life and find out which new therapies work best.

Our research group includes physicians, scientists, nurses, study coordinators and other collaborators.

Your IBD provider will talk to you about any active clinical trials for which your child is eligible.
