Bailey Rose's Story

In September 2024, an extraordinary journey began for Lauren and Thomas as they prepared to welcome their daughter, Bailey Rose. A routine check-up evolved into a referral to Johns Hopkins Center for Fetal Therapy for complications that required draining excess fluids that had developed in Bailey's abdomen and around her lungs. This process continued for nearly 14 weeks, as the fluid kept returning. The couple held onto hope, knowing they were doing everything possible for their baby's well-being.

As the weeks passed, the medical team closely monitored Bailey's growth. At 30 weeks, shunts placed into Bailey through Lauren's belly in order to drain fluid had failed. Given the option of a premature birth, her parents made the brave decision to let Bailey continue developing. Survival was the constant, gentle whisper of hope that kept their spirits high.

Then came January 2025, a snowstorm blanketing the world outside as Lauren went into labor. In the early morning, and after another draining procedure, Bailey was delivered by C-section, her tiny cries foreshadowing the fight that lay ahead. Rushed to the NICU at Johns Hopkins Children's Center, she was placed on an oscillating ventilator for breathing and fitted with tubes to drain fluid.

Bailey had developed a condition known as hydrops, a severe swelling caused by fluid accumulation in her tissues and organs as a fetus. Though it was daunting for her parents to see her connected to various machines, each beep and whir became a reminder of the incredible medical technology supporting her tiny life.

Bailey grew stronger. Each milestone — removing tubes, breathing on her own — was celebrated as a huge victory. Lauren and Thomas grew closer not only to each other but also to the extraordinary nurses and doctors who walked alongside them in this journey, infusing hope into every challenge. The moment they first held Bailey, several weeks after she was born, was one of pure joy.

Bailey was able to go home after over 100 days. Though faced with new challenges in feeding and reflux, her parents embraced it all with determination and love.

Today, Bailey Rose has progressed from tube-feeding to puree meals and even some solid food.  She has blossomed from a fragile newborn into a vibrant baby.

Lauren and Thomas learned that their love for their daughter and the support of those around them could turn a tumultuous journey into a radiant tale of hope and joy.
