First-Year Fellows
Joana (Jojo) Coelho, M.D.
Medical School: Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at SUNY Buffalo
Residency: Cohen Children’s Medical Center
Why I Chose Hopkins: During my interview day, my interactions with faculty members and current fellows felt truly genuine, like each person was not only rooting for my success, but interested in providing me with opportunities to get there. My interests as a provider have always centered around the idea of helping children and their families in as many ways as possible, sometimes even in ways outside of the traditional role of the emergency room. I was so excited and invigorated to see that resonate with the fellows and faculty at Hopkins too. It became clear that, at Hopkins, I would work with medical providers that artfully balanced the need for curiosity in medicine - in the form of brilliant research and quality improvement initiatives - with the importance of showing care and kindness to patients in all clinical interactions.
Academic Interests: Adolescent and reproductive health, LGBTQIA+ health, health equity and advocacy, medical education
Non-academic Interests: Reading, board games, cozy video games (i.e. Animal Crossing), watching all 48+ seasons of Survivor, spending time with my wife and our dog, Goldie!
Axel Ivander, M.D.
Medical School: Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland
Residency: Pediatrics at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School
Why I Chose Hopkins: I chose Johns Hopkins for my Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship because of the excellent combination of clinical training, academic resources, and innovation that it offers. The simulation technology at Hopkins is among the best in the country, and I'm excited to integrate that into my own skill development and education. I was also drawn by the collaborative environment—faculty members are dedicated to mentoring, and there are ample opportunities to participate in research, advocacy, and education. During my visit, I was impressed not only by the hospital’s facilities but also by how welcoming and supportive the team was. My partner and I felt at home in Baltimore, and we found a community we’re excited to be part of. Hopkins aligns with my long-term goals to be a clinician-educator and leader in pediatric emergency care, and I’m confident this program will give me the tools to grow in every dimension.
Academic Interests: Simulation, Informatics, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence
Non-academic Interests: Traveling, trying new restaurants/cafes and rowing.

Why I Chose Hopkins: I chose Hopkins because my interview day left such a positive impression on me. The staff was warm, welcoming, and genuinely interested in who I was and what my interests were (both within and outside of medicine). I felt like Hopkins would be an institution where I could challenge myself academically, develop new interests and passions as a fellow, thrive with an abundance of support and resources, while still being my full authentic self. I am beyond excited to begin my fellowship journey and cannot wait to see all the ways I grow during my time in fellowship! I also visited Baltimore the year prior and fell in love with the city.
