Howard County General Hospital Receives AHA/ASA Awards - 07/25/2019

Stroke and Heart Attack Programs Recognized

Release Date: July 25, 2019

COLUMBIA, Md. — Howard County General Hospital has been recognized by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association for excellence in the care of stroke and heart attack patients. The stroke program received the Get With The Guidelines® Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The heart program received the Bronze STEMI Receiving recognition in the Mission: Lifeline program.

Stroke Care
HCGH earned the stroke care award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, patients should also receive education on managing their health and get a follow-up visit scheduled, along with other care transition interventions.

To achieve the additional status of Target: Stroke Elite Plus, the hospital met quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke.

Heart Care
HCGH received the Mission: Lifeline® Bronze Receiving Quality Achievement Award for implementing specific quality improvement measures outlined by the AHA for the treatment of patients who suffer severe heart attacks. The hospital earned the award by meeting specific criteria and standards of performance for quick and appropriate treatment through emergency procedures to re-establish blood flow to blocked arteries in heart attack patients coming into the hospital directly or by transfer from another facility.
