Acute Pain Management
We provide individualized pain management services to children in our hospital.
Our pain management team provides acute pain management services to children and adolescents. Acute pain may be the result of surgery, trauma, cancer or complex medical problems and may require a specialized team with experience in pain management.
After an initial evaluation, we work with you, your child and your child’s care team to develop an individualized pain management plan. A member of the pain management team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to evaluate the treatment plan, monitor progress and continue with the plan or make changes if needed.
Pain management plans may include medications, physical and occupational therapy, the support of child life specialists and psychologists. Our goal is to minimize patients' pain and discomfort, and allow for a fast return to their daily activities.
Relieving Pain
We provide relief from acute pain using a variety of techniques, which may include:
- Types of nerve blocks:
- Intravenous opioids using patient-controlled analgesia methods (PCA pumps)
- Acupuncture
We provide access to a psychologist to assist patients and families in coping with the stressors of acute pain.
We also offer a number of other non-medicine pain therapies, such as biofeedback, guided imagery, etc., to help your child deal with pain and stress. Learn more about our complementary pain therapies.
