A Tradition of Innovation
At its founding in 1889, The Johns Hopkins Hospital revolutionized medical practice in the United States. With the opening of the School of Medicine four years later, Hopkins became America’s first true teaching hospital.
The dawn of this unprecedented model—integrating patient care with the best in medical education and research—set the stage for much of what we take for granted in medicine today, from the rigorous training of physicians and nurses to the emphasis on research and its rapid application to patient care. It also positioned Hopkins as a leader in medical innovation, a status we still hold today.
In this section you can learn more about Johns Hopkins, as well as about our medical innovations, past and present, that have helped shape the field.
