Master of Science in Public Health / Registered Dietitian Program
The Johns Hopkins Master of Science in Public Health/Registered Dietitian (MSPH/RD) Program is a collaborative program between The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPH) and the Dietetics Education Program at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (JHBMC). The intense, 18-month, graduate-level education program has an emphasis in public health nutrition. Didactic and rotation experiences provide core educational competencies for entry-level dietetic practice and have been designed for the educational and supervised experience required to sit for the Commission on Dietetics Registration Exam for Dietitians. The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center (JHBMC) is a full service, 560-bed community teaching hospital and continuing care facility located on a 1,000-acre campus in Baltimore, Maryland. Specialty centers of the medical campus include a wound care center, neonatal intensive care unit, burn unit, a continuing care facility, a Joint Commission Center of Excellence for bariatric surgery and oncology, alcohol and drug treatment center, and cardiac rehabilitation program.
JHBMC is part of the Johns Hopkins Health System. Rotations will also take place at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and may be scheduled at other Johns Hopkins hospitals and entities.

Mission of the MSPH/RD Program
The program is consistent with the missions within Johns Hopkins Medicine:
- To provide a seamless dietetics education program for students;
- To provide the highest quality training in the field of nutrition and dietetics through a strong, interdisciplinary training team;
- To enable students to develop skills in dietetic leadership; and
- To promote the development of dietetic professionals who are able to embrace proven theory, evaluate current research and communicate effectively to other health professionals, peers and the lay population.
Program Goals and Outcomes
The program staff, faculty and preceptors are committed to preparing graduates to become outstanding public health and dietetics professionals.
The following goals and outcome measures for the program have been established:
The program will provide students with rigorous public health and clinical training to enable them to provide nutrition services to diverse populations.
- Program graduates will, on average, evaluate the program with a score of “4” or above in the areas of student expectations met, academic preparation, preparation for entry-level dietetics and resource availability.
- Program graduates will, on average, evaluate the program with a score of “4” or above in the areas of exposure to public health resources and practical experience attained while enrolled in the program.
The program will prepare graduates to become skilled entry-level public health nutrition professionals.
- At least 80 percent of students enrolled in the combined MSPH/RD program will successfully complete the program within 29 months of initial enrollment.
- Ninety percent of program graduates are expected to take the Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR) credentialing exam for dietitian nutritionists within 12 months of program completion.
- At least 80 percent of graduates over a five-year period pass the CDR credentialing exam for dietitian nutritionists within one year following first attempt.
- At least 80 percent of program alumni will achieve a first-time passing score on the RD exam.
- Within 12 months of program completion, at least 80 percent of graduates seeking employment or an advanced degree will either be employed in the dietetics/public health field of their choice or enrolled in an accredited continuing education program.
- At least 80 percent of graduates and their employers will rate program alumni on the graduate surveys as “prepared” for entry-level dietetics/public health nutrition positions.
- At least 80 percent of graduates will evaluate the program with a score of “3” (agree/satisfied) or above as having a structure that adequately prepared them academically and professionally for a position in public health.
Program Completion Rate and Pass Rate on the RD Exam
The MSPH/RD program has maintained a 98-percent completion rate since its inception in 2007, and 100% of graduates have achieved first-time passing score on the RD exam.

Total tuition expenses for the MSPH/RD Program include applicable tuition and fees at The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health (JHSPU), in addition to a clinical training fee of $7,500. Students also will need a personal calculator and medical dictionary, and are expected to provide typed reports and projects. They must be able to communicate with faculty and preceptors via e-mail. Computer access is required.
