A shining star in Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center’s workplace programs is our education and empowerment programs connecting managers and employees with resources that help them become more comfortable working with individuals who may have physical, emotional, or cognitive disabilities.
Disabilities Mentoring Day
Johns Hopkins Bayview organizes annual Disability Mentoring Days with the Maryland State Department of Education's Division of Rehabilitation Services. It is a day of learning and career devel-opment for students and job seekers with disabilities. Every October, participants spend a day with various Team Bayview members who teach them about their jobs and health care career opportunities. The participants also practice interviewing skills, as well as job shadowing and hands-on career exploration.
Annually, an Accommodations Expo allows employees and managers to look at assistive devices that are available to help employees with disabilities stay at work longer, increase their productivity, eliminate unnecessary stress on their bodies, and engage with their co-workers on an even playing field. Rehabilitation therapists, coaches and vendors from all over the state of Maryland line up to participate in what has been called “one of the best” opportunities they have to pull out all the stops and show off all of the new technology and inexpensive accommodations available to employees and their managers. These devices have changed the employment outlook for hundreds of thousands of workers with disabilities.
Community Job Fairs
Focusing on non-traditional forms of community recruitment, JHBMC has successfully attracted a wide variety of applicants from around Maryland to their Community Job Fairs. Hundreds of potential employees have had the opportunity to learn about the jobs available at Johns Hopkins Bayview and participate in online demonstrations and interactive exhibits. Coaching resources are also available onsite to help applicants with the online application portal or answer questions about resume writing.
