Mary Elizabeth Garrett Lecture
The JHU SOM will host the Mary Elizabeth Lecture on September 30, 2020 at 4 PM, virtually.
The OWISM continues to celebrate the impact of women on the rich history of Johns Hopkins since its founding in 1893. 2020 is the 100 year anniversary of the ratification of the nineteenth amendment. The 19th amendment guarantees all American Women the right to vote. Achieving this milestone required a lengthy and difficult struggle; the ratification was certified on August 26, 1920, changing the face of the American electorate forever.
Elaine Weiss will be the Keynote speaker at this lecture. Elaine is an award winning journalist and writer whose work has appeared in the Atlantic and the New York Times, as well as in reports and documentaries for National Public Radio and Voice of America. She is the author of The Woman’s Hour, the gripping story of how America’s women won their own freedom and kicked off the opening campaign in the great twentieth century battles of civil rights.
Additional details about how to view this lecture will be provided via email. To learn more about this event and others, please visit the JHU Office of Women in Science and Medicine website. Additional events are listed on the JHU Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commemoration website.
