Types of CPE Programs at JHBMC

Part-Time Extended Internship Programs

The Part-Time Extended Internship offers a flexible schedule for those seeking to learn more about hospital chaplaincy and to develop spiritual care skills. Typically, four to six students are accepted into this program. The CPE internship is offered twice a year. The student group meets weekly for lectures, discussion and student presentations. Each student is responsible for providing 300 clinical ministry hours, which may include on-call coverage of the hospital. Students should anticipate approximately 5 hours of education each week and 9-21 hours of clinical ministry each week. The hours of spiritual care provision often may be negotiated so that students may integrate this program into their personal schedules.

Residency Program

The Residency Program is advanced learning in the spiritual care environment. It is a full-time, year-long, clinical learning program at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center that allows residents to complete three consecutive units of CPE. Learners accepted into this program are expected to work 40+hours/week including on-call coverage year-round. Residents are challenged through assignments to specific clinical areas within Johns Hopkins for longer periods of time, while developing key relationships within the interdisciplinary team.

The curriculum focuses on professional development as much as personal and pastoral reflection. Because the resident group remains intact for a year, depth of learning occurs on many levels. A stipend in the amount of $35,568.20 is offered in addition to a complete benefits package to those who are accepted into this competitive program. Residents may be placed at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center or Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center. Residents will remain at the same hospital for the entire year.

Pre-requisites include:

  • Master of Divinity Degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of one ACPE, Inc. accredited CPE unit completed
  • Ecclesiastical endorsement or in good standing with a faith group
  • A completed application
  • $50 application fee
  • An interview with a qualified interviewer
  • Eligibility to be an employee of the Johns Hopkins Health System

Tuition: $300/CPE unit ($900 per year)

Stipend: $35,568.20, in addition to a complete benefits package

The Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center CPE Program has a rolling admissions process and accepts applications year round. We encourage candidates to submit their application no later than Feb 1 for the year they would like to be considered.

Certified Educator Program

The Certified Educator Program is designed for the CPE student who has completed a minimum of four units of ACPE, Inc. accredited CPE and has met the requirements set forth by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. It is recommended that students considering entering the Certified Educator training program become familiar with the certification process within ACPE, Inc. This includes a long-term commitment to their education process. Certified Educator students are part of a regional peer group and are trained, one-on-one, with their Educator. Exposure to theory and group facilitation is often the beginning as a student enters this intensive education at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and will last three years.

Please reach out to Rev. Dr. Marla Coulter-McDonald for the most current information related to openings in this program.
