Meet the Johns Hopkins Schools of Medical Imaging faculty.

Mary Fasano, MBA, BS, CNMT, NMTCB(CT)

Director, Schools of Medical Imaging

Mary Fasano graduated from the Johns Hopkins Nuclear Medicine Technology program and went on to earn a Master of Business Administration from Bloomburg University. She has spent 16 years focused on clinical and research work in nuclear medicine at a variety of settings including large academic institutions and smaller community hospitals. She then served as the Nuclear Medicine Technology program director and an instructor at the Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences before joining Jubilant Radiopharma. She became the director of the schools of medical imaging in 2023.

Hayley O. Bartkus joined The Johns Hopkins Schools of Medical Imaging faculty in 2023 as director of the diagnostic medical Sonography program. Hayley’s sonography story began at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where she graduated first-generation cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography in 2017. Hayley credits her passion for ultrasound education to her faculty at RIT, having gone on to earn a Master of Science in Health Professions Education from Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine in 2022, where she is now proud to also serve on the faculty of her graduate program. Passionate about pulse-waves and patient-centered care, Hayley is committed to advancing the field of diagnostic medical sonography with a mission to improve patient outcomes through her advocacy and work as an educator, sonographer, and host of her podcast 256 Shades of Gray.

Hayley began her professional career in the radiology department at Albany Medical Center in 2017. In 2018, she returned to her home city of Philadelphia, where she continued in the general and pediatric specialties before transitioning to high-risk obstetric sonography at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. During her time at UPenn, Hayley participated in cutting-edge clinical research, including uterine transplantation and medical device trials for pelvic floor wellness, while also helping align resident and advanced practice provider ultrasound education.

Honored as RIT College of Health Sciences & Technology’s 2025 Emerging Leader Award recipient, AS Software’s 2023 Sonography Impact Community Advocate Award recipient, and selected as the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography’s 2024 Annual Conference keynote speaker, Hayley continues to pursue her mission of advocacy for equitable, evidence-based, patient-centered medical care, with a strong emphasis on the vital role of sonographers and the importance of high-quality ultrasonic imaging.

Edward Yuhanna earned his Bachelor of Arts before joining the Johns Hopkins Schools of Medical Imaging diagnostic medical sonography program in 2014, where he graduated as valedictorian in 2015 and remains a very proud alumnus.
 
Ed began his career at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, gaining clinical experience across multiple specialties. He holds American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography credentials in abdomen, OB/GYN, pediatric, vascular, and musculoskeletal sonography.
 
Ed returned to his alma mater in 2018 as an adjunct ultrasound physics instructor, where he played a key role in strengthening and updating the ultrasound physics curriculum. He became a clinical education coordinator in 2020 and served as interim program director from summer 2022 through spring 2023, continuing to contribute to curriculum development and overall program advancement.
 
Ed deeply loves the work he does, and is widely respected by students for his clarity, support and commitment to educational excellence as well as their success and preparation for their futures as sonographers.

David Kelkis is the director of nuclear medicine technology for the schools of medical imaging. Before coming to this position he worked as a nuclear medicine technologist at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He graduated from the Johns Hopkins Nuclear Medicine program and has certifications in both nuclear medicine and CT imaging. He also has a Bachelor of Neuroscience and Philosophy from the University of Scranton. Currently while teaching at the school he is also working towards his Masters of Education in Digital Age Learning and Educational Technology at Johns Hopkins University.

Stacey O’Brien is the radiography program director at The Johns Hopkins Hospital Schools of Medical Imaging. Her first job in radiology was as a full-time radiographer in the division of pediatric radiology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, prior to joining the schools of medical imaging as the radiography clinical coordinator for ten years. Ms. O’Brien graduated with honors from Western Maryland College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology. She then received her radiography certificate from The Johns Hopkins Hospital and a Master of Education in the Health Professions from Johns Hopkins University.

Shatera Walters graduated from The Community College of Baltimore County’s School of Health Professions Radiography program in 2015 with an Associates of Science in Radiologic Sciences. Upon graduation, she worked as a technologist at The University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. She worked her way from staff radiologic technologist to chief technologist in a few short years. Aside from her full-time position with UCMC, in 2017 she became an adjunct faculty member for her alma mater CCBC where she taught lab and held tutoring sessions. In 2019, she graduated from Northwestern State University of Louisiana with a Bachelor’s of Science in Radiologic Sciences. Ms. Walters became a clinical coordinator with the Radiography Program at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2021.
