Professors’ Award for Excellence in Teaching
The Professors’ Award for Excellence in Teaching, established in 1981 by the Advisory Board of the Medical Faculty, honors three members of the faculty each year whose teaching is judged to be that of the highest quality and to have a significant continuing impact on learners in the school of medicine.
Nominations
The goal of this award is to give prominent recognition to these contributions in teaching. All full professors in the school of medicine are eligible to submit nominations. Nominees need not be full professors. Professors may nominate one or two faculty in each of the three categories:
- A faculty member whose principal teaching effort is in the biomedical sciences
(for either medical or graduate Students). Candidates whose teaching primarily impacts master’s and Ph.D. students would fall into this category. - A faculty member whose principal teaching effort is in the clinical sciences
- A part-time faculty member in recognition of their commitment to teaching
All nominees will also be considered for the JHU Alumni Association’s Excellence in Teaching Award.
The call for nominations typically comes out in January or February, with selections chosen by April of each year.
Criteria
The quality of teaching and the impact of the awardees on the educational experience of learners at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine are the most important considerations. For the purpose of these awards, all graduate students, medical students, residents, and fellows in the school of medicine, will be defined as learners. Additional factors such as publication of educational books and articles, national lectureships, and involvement in continuing education will also be taken into account. Nominees for these awards are expected to meet standards of professional conduct befitting a faculty member and consistent with the qualities these awards recognize and honor. Violations of these standards may disqualify nominees from consideration by the committee.
