Scholarly Concentrations Award for Excellence in Mentoring

The Scholarly Concentrations Award for Excellence in Mentoring was begun in 2015 as a way to recognize the faculty mentor (or mentors) who best embody the goals of the Scholarly Concentrations Program in fostering the spirit of independent scholarship among Johns Hopkins medical students.

Each year, students who believe their mentoring experience has been exceptional are encouraged to submit a one-page nomination letter. A committee of at least three faculty who have taught in the Scholarly Concentrations course ranks each letter according to the criteria listed below, and meets to discuss and select a winner(s). Previous award winners are not eligible.

The award honors faculty mentors who clearly went above and beyond in their commitment to mentoring student research in the Scholarly Concentrations program, as evidenced by:

1. Inspiring students to engage with original scholarship as a key part of their medical education.
2. Making student education a priority by guiding students to formulate research questions, design and perform experiments, and evaluate data.
3. Encouraging students to take ownership of an original project.
4. Supporting students at all stages of the project, from conception through implementation to presentation.
5. Demonstrating a commitment to mentoring through a meaningful investment of time and resources in students’ scholarly development.
6. Taking time to guide a student’s educational and personal development, including work-life balance, professional skills, and ethical conduct.
