Consent Form for Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Research
Research use of human materials to create pluripotent stem cells is subject to oversight by Institutional Review Boards (IRBs). This work can raise ethical challenges, and an increasing number of researchers at Johns Hopkins University have requested guidance on obtaining appropriate informed consent of donors who contribute human materials for this type of research. In order to assist investigators in this ethically challenging endeavor, the Johns Hopkins University Institutional Stem Cell Research Oversight (JHU ISCRO) Committee worked in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM) IRBs to create a consent template that incorporates language particular to this type of research. The form is now available for use on the JHM IRB website.
Of note, particular types of human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) research that might raise difficult ethical questions such as the creation of human gametes and embryos must also be reviewed by the JHU ISCRO Committee. For details, please see the JHU ISCRO website.
