U.S. News & World Report this morning announced the 2019-20 results of its annual survey to determine its top-ranked children’s hospitals in the United States. Johns Hopkins Children’s Center placed ninth in the U.S. and remained the top-ranked children’s hospital in Maryland.

The Children’s Center this year also earned a spot on the U.S. News Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll, a list of the 10 pediatric hospitals with the highest point totals in the survey. This marks the Children’s Center’s eighth appearance since the Honor Roll was established 11 years ago.

Boston Children’s Hospital ranked first overall in the report.

“We congratulate Boston Children’s Hospital and all the pediatric centers on the U.S. News & World Report list,” says Paul B. Rothman, M.D., dean of the medical faculty and CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine. “We’re honored to be recognized alongside them.”

In a letter sent to the Johns Hopkins Medicine staff this morning, Kevin W. Sowers, M.S.N., R.N., F.A.A.N., the Johns Hopkins Health System president and Johns Hopkins Medicine executive vice president, called the ranking “a testament to the dedication of our exceptional physicians, nurses and staff members.”

Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, ranked nationally in both Cancer and Pulmonology. “We appreciate the high-quality care that our colleagues in Florida deliver to our pediatric patients,” says Sowers.

The Children’s Center in Baltimore is the only “hospital within a hospital” on the Honor Roll. All others are freestanding pediatric hospitals with no adult medicine counterpart.

“Every day, our Johns Hopkins Children’s Center physicians and staff provide expert, compassionate and healing care for our youngest patients. Their commitment to discovering the cures of tomorrow and to providing world-class care is unparalleled,” says Redonda G. Miller, M.D., M.B.A., president of The Johns Hopkins Hospital. “I’m thrilled that we have once again been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best children’s hospitals in the country.”

Tina L. Cheng, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Department of Pediatrics and co-director of the Children’s Center, calls this year’s ranking “a good opportunity to salute each and every one of our physicians, nurses and staff members who make Johns Hopkins Children’s Center a leader in the field. There are hundreds of pediatric hospitals in the United States, and it’s an honor to be recognized as one of the best.”

The methodology used by U.S. News to determine its Best Children’s Hospitals changes each year and considers three main criteria: structure, which refers to hospital resources directly related to patient care; process, which evaluates commitment to best practices and infection prevention; and outcomes, which measure survival as well as functional success and adverse events.

“Making the U.S. News Honor Roll reflects our pediatric hospital staff’s commitment and dedication,” says David J. Hackam, M.D., Ph.D., surgeon-in-chief and co-director at the Children’s Center.

As in previous years, the Children’s Center is ranked among the top children’s hospitals in all 10 specialties surveyed by U.S. News. Eight of Johns Hopkins Children’s Center’s specialties are ranked among the top 20 nationally, with four in the top 10 and one in the top five. Six specialties improved their rankings from last year.

With 209 beds, it is Maryland’s largest children’s hospital and is the only state-designated trauma service and burn unit for pediatric patients. Since 2012, the Charlotte R.
