Johns Hopkins Neurology: Half a Century of Innovation
A History of Neurology at Johns Hopkins
The field of neurology has changed remarkably during the last 50 years. From a leisurely descriptive specialty to its present dynamic state, neurology is an exciting, therapeutically oriented specialty, driven by technological advances and new concepts in multiple areas that were unimaginable in the early days. The Johns Hopkins Department of Neurology, which was founded in 1969, has been a leader in the discovery of many of these advances, and in the application of many changes that now define this specialty.
Johns Hopkins Neurology: Half a Century of Innovation vividly describes transformations in many subspecialty areas of neurology. Read about the advances in stroke, neuromuscular disease, immunology, imaging, genetics, epilepsy, neurovirology, degenerative diseases, information technology and others.
The riveting accounts and illustrations of discoveries in these fields tell the story of how neurology has advanced, as Johns Hopkins has been at the forefront of the immensely fascinating subject of the nervous system.
Personal Stories from Our Alumni
A collection of more than 100 personal statements from former residents and fellows who trained in the Johns Hopkins Department of Neurology is the basis for the final chapter of Johns Hopkins Neurology: Half a Century of Innovation.
Alumni were invited to write a brief account of how Johns Hopkins prepared them for their careers and influenced their intellectual growth. They also listed their most important scientific publications and honors that they had received. Many have gone on to become leaders in their fields. Accounts are listed alphabetically here, but in the printed book, they are in chronological order.
What emerges is a unique history of the department’s development, each statement bearing a personal stamp and description of an epoch, and its evolution into “a magical place of learning and discovery.”
