About the Program

The Physician Scientist Pathway (PSP) activities are thoughtfully designed to nurture the thrill of discovery. We will facilitate links with physician scientists and mentors within the Hopkins-scientific community from the beginning of training. This is supplemented by both formal and informal interactions with members of the PSP council, composed of renowned physician scientist within the Johns Hopkins biomedical research community. Additional programs include:

  • How to give a talk
  • Paper and grant writing
  • Mentor-mentee relationships
  • Conducting job searches
  • Academic promotions

Trainees are encouraged to present research findings at international meetings and will present their work at a department wide scientific meeting and symposium. PSP trainees are also encouraged to take the following courses:

The PSP offers opportunities for accelerated/short-track clinical training (two years) or standard/categorical clinical training (three years) designed to meet all criteria required by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) for certification eligibility. In addition, the participants undertake three or more years of postdoctoral research and clinical fellowship training.

Short-track PSP:

Eligibility: MD/PhD or MD with 3 or more years of research leading to dissertation and first author publications

Program:

  • PGY1: Internship
  • PGY2: Intensive residency
  • PGY3-5 or more: Clinical fellowship, postdoctoral research, and mentored research award application

Standard (categorical) PSP:

Eligibility: MD/PhD or MD with prior research training leading to dissertation and/or first author publication

Program:

  • PGY1: Internship
  • PGY2: Junior residency (clinical rotations; 3 months research elective combined with one continuity clinic/week)
  • PGY3: Senior residency (clinical rotations; 3 months research elective combined with one continuity clinic/week)
  • PGY4-6 or more: Clinical fellowship, postdoctoral research, and mentored research award application

Fellowship Training

Trainees will be connected with fellowships as early as possible in the PSP. This may lead to opportunities to secure fellowship training before the formal NRMP process. The earliest would be during internship, particularly for those pursuing the ABIM research track. The PSP leaders will facilitate these connections with mentors and fellowship programs.

Journal Club

Residents in the physician-scientist track meet every other month for a Journal Club focused on basic/translational contributions to clinical care in a variety of fields.
