The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition offers a three-year fellowship designed to prepare outstanding individuals for an academic career in our subspecialty. Listed below are the planned activities for the three years of fellowship. An attending physician is present for inpatient services, outpatient clinics and procedures. All activities listed are directly supervised by a faculty member. On-call schedules include the fellow and attending physician for each day of the month. Fellows are evaluated by the faculty members every six months.

Clinical

The fellow will be expected to attain clinical competency in diagnosing and treating children and adolescents with a wide variety of gastrointestinal (GI), liver, pancreatic and nutritional disorders. An important part of the clinical training is the development of proficiency in the skillful performance of the procedures done by pediatric gastroenterologists.

Research

The fellow will work on the development of sound scientific hypotheses design of either a clinical or basic science research project, which can be achieved within the three years of fellowship, development of appropriate research methodologies and of scientific writing skills. A final goal of the research program is to train the fellow in critical reading of scientific literature.

Teaching

The fellow will learn skills in teaching medical students and faculty. This is done by the vehicle of the daily ward rounds where fellows lead the discussion regarding patient management and consults.
