Johns Hopkins’ key performance indicator (KPI) comparisons program guides health care organizations in data collection and comparisons against other international institutions, so they can continue to deliver groundbreaking solutions to tackle the greatest health care challenges.

Our Approach

Johns Hopkins Medicine is a global leader in health care delivery, patient safety, research and medical education. At the core of all activities is our pursuit and utilization of valid and reliable data.

Our KPI comparisons program is customized to our clients’ needs. Typically, the data collected and analyzed is divided into two categories: core KPIs and client-selected indicators.

Core KPIs include Joint Commission International’s International Patient Safety Goals (IPSG) and Hospital-Acquired Infections (HAIs). The IPSG KPIs are measured against Johns Hopkins’ key targets, and the HAI KPIs are measured against the International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium and the National Healthcare Safety Network benchmarks.

Most engagements have a phased approach:

Assessment and review of KPI data collection methodology
Monthly online data uploads by client, with the Johns Hopkins team educating and providing insight and training on identified gaps or risks on the data collection, verification or validation processes
Quarterly comparisons of client data against other international health care organizations
On-site visit(s) for continued data verification and validation
Development support and review of KPI improvement plan

As senior director of infection prevention and the hospital epidemiologist for The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Lisa Maragakis is responsible for conceptualization, planning, implementation and development of the Johns Hopkins Health System’s infection control and prevention program.
