Departmental Billing

June 21, 2007

JHU SOM Department Directors and Administrators:

As you know, the JHM IRB bills for review of commercial studies with support in excess of $10,000. The fees are $2000 for initial review, $1000 for each annual review and $100 for review of exempt research. No fees are charged for review of amendments. The fees collected from reviewing commercial studies help fund the IRB. We do not charge for review of NIH and unsponsored studies. Despite spending significant time on fee collections, the IRB continues to have thousands of dollars in uncollected fees. To be certain each department is treated fairly, to increase overall efficiency and to focus resources on the review process, we are requiring each department to specify a non-sponsored account for billing IRB review fees. All IRB review fees for principal investigators in that department will be billed against that account.

Please provide a departmental account number for billing IRB reviews within the next 10 days. If you have any questions regarding this request, please contact me at or Judith Carrithers, JHM IRB Director of Operations, at .

Thank you for your support as we continue to support clinical research through the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Office of Human Subjects Protection.

Thank you,

Daniel Ford, MD, MPH
Vice Dean for Clinical Investigation
