Final Recertification Reminder - February 2012

February 15, 2012

Dear Colleagues,

REMINDER: After March 15, 2012, the JHM IRB will not accept new applications from PIs who completed human subjects research training more than five years ago and have not completed recertification.

The new JHM recertification requirements were announced in March 2011: All Principal Investigators engaged in human subjects research must complete recertification within five years of initial certification and every five years thereafter.

At this time, 25 percent of PIs required to complete recertification by March 2012 have completed the requirements, with a substantial number on their way to completion.  Please complete any required recertification training by March 15. After that date, the JHM IRB will not process a new research application until the PI has completed required recertification. As a reminder, PIs must earn a total of 100 points in order to meet their recertification requirements. A variety of in-person and online learning activities are still available, including:

25 online courses offered through CITI (Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative):

  • Good Clinical Practices refresher courses
  • Initial and Refresher HSR training
  • Responsible Conduct of Research

In-person activities available through March 15, 2012:

For more information on these courses, course registration and recertification point tracking, please go to myLearning at

A limited number of other learning activities at the institutional, departmental or divisional levels, such as Grand Rounds, lectures, conferences or seminars, may qualify for points toward recertification. The content must focus on research ethics and the activity must be approved in advance by the Human Research Protection Program. Those wishing to apply for recertification points for their learning activity can find the request form at: The form must be submitted four weeks before the activity.

If you have questions regarding recertification requirements please contact the eIRB help desk at 2-2092 or the IRB Training and Education Office at 2-0376.
