Sub-Saharan Africa shoulders a disproportionate burden of the HIV epidemic globally, making it an important region to conduct HIV cure research. Yet many HIV cure strategies are not being designed or tested with most people living with HIV in mind, particularly those in Africa. A new generation of research scientists from Africa working in Africa is essential to ensure that future research on HIV cure strategies is inclusive of the people most in need of achieving cures and who will benefit most from therapeutic advances. The goal of the Johns Hopkins CFAR Africure program is to recruit, mentor, and support highly talented early-stage and mid-career investigators from sub-Saharan Africa to address innovative and novel questions related to HIV cure research.
