Letter From Our Program Director

Welcome to the Johns Hopkins Hospital Limb Preservation and Wound Care Fellowship. We sponsor a fully accredited ACGME-equivalent program. This fellowship is for candidates who have completed their ACGME residency or podiatric training. Each year we accept a single fellow for a twelve-month educational experience with the goal of training leaders in the field of Limb Preservation and Wound Care.

The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions are steeped in tradition. The Johns Hopkins Hospital is ranked nationally in the top five of the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings for more than 20 years. The Johns Hopkins Department of Surgery is the birthplace of modern surgical training with chairpersons including Halsted, Lewis, Blalock, Zuidema, Cameron and Freischlag.

This Fellowship program is based in the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy. This allows for the closest of collaborations between the primary team members of vascular surgery and surgical podiatry. Our Multidisciplinary Limb Preservation and Wound Care service is one of the busiest in the nation, offering seamless collaboration with other disciplines including a wide array of lower extremity procedures. On average, we perform approximately 350 complex foot and lower extremity surgeries. Our vascular division provides over 500 open and endovascular revascularizations per year.

John Hopkins has one of the lowest published lower extremity major amputation rates nationwide. It is our goal for the fellow to achieve a level of independence in decision-making and patient management, as well as the ability to be mentored equally by each attending staff. Fellows receive ample exposure in our outpatient clinic setting, as well as numerous clinical research projects being performed in the Division throughout the year. The fellow is encouraged to present their research at national society meetings.

Finally, the training at Johns Hopkins is unparalleled. The breadth of surgical cases and their level of complexity prepare the fellows for any future career they choose. The fellow will have the opportunity to work with faculty surgeons trained in podiatry who have advanced training in adult foot and ankle reconstruction, deformity correction, and limb salvage. There is also a protected educational morning on Thursdays with lectures from expert Johns Hopkins faculty on a wide range of topics related to vascular surgery, vascular medicine, wound management, and limb preservation.

This fellowship is purely sponsored by philanthropic patient donations of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Department of Surgery, Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy.

We hope that you will consider applying  to our program. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].
