Johns Hopkins Noninvasive Cardiovascular Imaging provides specialized imaging programs to visualize a variety of heart and vascular conditions.

The Johns Hopkins Echocardiographic Laboratory specializes in clinical and investigative echocardiography, with advanced facilities including an outpatient and inpatient center located on the fourth floor of the Sheikh Zayed Tower of The Johns Hopkins Hospital.Satellite echocardiographic laboratories are located at all Johns Hopkins Community Physicians locations. The lab is nationally accredited through the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission.
The laboratory is comprised of 10 rooms and is equipped with 20 advanced echocardiographic systems:
- Cardiac ultrasound examinations
- Stress echocardiogram
- 2D and 3D Transesophageal Echocardiograms (TEE)
- Imaging reading and interpretation
Our laboratory also provides echocardiographic guidance during complex interventions in the catheterization laboratory (interventional echocardiography). The Echocardiographic Laboratory also offers:
- Strain imaging (for the improved detection of systolic dysfunction)
- Contrast studies
- Optimization for left ventricular assist devices (LVADs)
- Specialized studies for the evaluation of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

The cardiac CT program provides clinical services at both The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Both campuses operate 320-slice CT scanners, which acquire CT scans within less than one second, leading to lower average radiation doses to patients. Clinical services include:- Evaluation of coronary heart disease in patients with acute or chronic chest pain
- Assessment of cardiovascular structure and function in patients with cardiomyopathy or congenital heart disease
- Guidance of invasive procedures

Johns Hopkins is a pioneer in the development of cardiac MRI for a variety of conditions including arrhythmias (abnormalities of the heart beat), heart failure and other conditions. Cardiovascular MRI is jointly run by the Departments of Radiology and Medicine, involving cardiologists and radiologists in support of both clinical patient care needs as well as research studies involving clinical trials and cutting edge research in clinical MRI.

The Echocardiographic Lab is actively involved in multiple research projects to improve diagnostic capabilities of non-invasive imaging. Current research interests include:
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
- Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD)
- Systemic sclerosis and pulmonary hypertension
- Cardiotoxicity
- Structural heart disease
- Infiltrative heart disease
The Echocardiographic Laboratory Research Program is led by director Dr. Monica Mukherjee. The lab provides support for clinical trials in echocardiography and cardiovascular ultrasound. Lab staff members assist with all imaging aspects of the clinical research process, including protocol development, on-site training and skilled interpretation of transthoracic echocardiograms, stress tests, and transesophageal echocardiograms. The Echocardiographic Laboratory provides strict quality assurance, fast turnaround times, and high-quality image storage.
Our echocardiography fellowship furthers the advancement of cardiac imaging. This fellowship is led by the echocardiography education committee and CAA-HEP Cardiac Sonography Training Program. The echocardiography fellowship consists of weekly echocardiography lectures, sonography courses, echocardiography grand rounds and regular CME courses throughout the year.

The Cardiac CT Practicum and CT Myocardial Perfusion Imaging Training Course has educated more than 1,000 national and international trainees. The CT program continues ongoing experimental and clinical studies, which include research on atherosclerotic plaque imaging, determination of coronary blood flow, and comparative effectiveness of cardiac CT for patient outcome.

The Cardiac MRI Service supports clinical studies and clinical research, which includes:
- Investigation of global and regional left ventricular function by MRI tissue tagging
- Measurements of infarct size and microvascular obstruction by contrast-enhanced MRI
- Development of myocardial perfusion techniques and vascular MRI applications
- MR imaging for assessment of a variety of disease states including: arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD), hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM), HIV-related cardiovascular disease and infiltrative heart disease
- MR measure of coronary endothelial function
- MR spectroscopy to quantify myocardial fat content and evaluate myocardial energetics

The Echocardiographic Laboratory is located on the fourth floor of the Sheikh Zayed Tower of the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and features satellite echocardiographic laboratories at all Johns Hopkins Community Physicians locations.
