Lazo Promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine
October 4, 2019
It gives us tremendous pleasure to announce the promotion of Dr. Mariana Lazo-Elizondo to Associate Professor of Medicine!
Dr. Lazo received her medical degree from the University of La Salle in Mexico City, graduating at the top of her class. After receiving a competitive scholarship from the Mexican Government (National Council of Science and Technology) to undertake post-graduate education at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, she completed a Master in Science degree in Epidemiology (General Epidemiology track) followed by a PhD in Epidemiology and a postdoctoral fellowship. In 2012, we were delighted to recruit Dr. Lazo to the faculty in General Internal Medicine with a charge to develop a research program on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and other chronic cardiometabolic diseases.
Dr. Lazo’s doctoral dissertation, focused on characterizing the epidemiology of NAFLD in the general US population, is legendary in the School. She and Dr. Clark secured R01 funding that allowed them to conduct the re-evaluation of ~14,000 stored ultrasounds to create the Hepatic Steatosis component of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III). This new component is now a public use resource that has been used to produce >35 publications, and >50 presentations so far by researchers across the world. Dr. Lazo’s dissertation resulted in four important and highly cited publications in the British Medical Journal, Annals of Internal Medicine, Hepatology, and the American Journal of Epidemiology. Her PhD work was recognized by induction into the Delta Omega honor society and the Phi Beta Kappa Society.
Dr. Lazo’s has continued to be a highly productive researcher and her promotion is based on her national and international reputation as an outstanding clinically trained epidemiologist with expertise in liver diseases, especially NAFLD, and other chronic cardiometabolic diseases.
As most of you know, this promotion marks the culmination of her career at Hopkins. Her last day as FT faculty at Hopkins was September 30, 2019. We look forward to continued collaborations with her, as PT faculty, from her new faculty position at Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Lazo, and wishing her the very best in the next phase of her career!
