The Gastrointestinal Epidemiology Research Center
The Gastrointestinal Epidemiology Research Center includes researchers addressing contemporary issues in the clinical care of patients with gastrointestinal conditions.
The mission of the Center is to identify effective, safe and cost-effective treatments for gastrointestinal conditions.
We accomplish our mission through a variety of epidemiologic study designs including systematic reviews, network meta-analyses, prospective and longitudinal studies, retrospective cohorts including those based on large existing datasets and cross-sectional studies. The Center has experience working to establish the prevalence of gastrointestinal diseases, identify which treatments work best for which patients at which time in their disease course (personalized medicine), and identify the side effects from treatments and which patients are most susceptible.
Major contributions to the field include:
- Comparing the treatments for Crohn’s disease for a U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Report
- Examining variation in the use of different surgical techniques
- Identifying treatments to prevent post-ERCP pancreatitis using network meta-analysis
- Creating a method to identify chronic pancreatitis patients at the great risk of readmission
The Center provides lectures on the conduct of clinical research including how to pick an important clinical research question, how to build a strong clinical research team, writing a research plan, choosing among the different analytic methods to match the design of the study and how to get your paper published in a journal commensurate with the impact of the findings.
Our team includes clinical faculty, public health researchers, clinical and research fellows, residents, medical students and visiting scientists.
If you are interested in funding a clinical research project, scheduling a lecture series for your institution or collaborating with our team please contact the Director, Susan Hutfless at email@example.com or 410-502-0194.
