Burn Survivor Support Group

The mission of the New Life Burn Society is to empower past and present burn injured patients to learn, grow and begin a new life as a survivor. Our ultimate purpose is to help build the confidence of burn survivors so that they can engage wholeheartedly in developing new lifelong friendships to help foster a sense of belonging and community.
Program Information
- To provide confidential peer support
- To represent and support The Phoenix Society in survivor recovery and advocacy
- To assist with the S.O.A.R. Program (Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery) and World Burn Congress
- To increase participation in the New Life Burn Society
- To collaborate with the Johns Hopkins Burn Center and the Baltimore Regional Firefighters Burn Foundation for events, education, injury prevention, survivor support and advocacy
Support Groups
Monthly meetings are held every third Tuesday of the month from noon to 1 p.m. Meetings are held in the Dr. Andrew Munster Conference Room (3rd floor, Burn Conference Room).
The society also offers one-on-one meetings for those who are not comfortable in a group setting. For more information, please contact Brooke Dean, DPT, burn survivor support group coordinator, at [email protected].
Activities
Many close friendships have formed because of the New Life Burn Society. In addition to monthly meetings, relationships are strengthened through activities that take place beyond the hospital walls. Some of these activities include bowling nights, Orioles games, movie nights, an annual picnic, fundraising events and an annual holiday party.
Mid-Atlantic Burn Camp is offered to pediatric burn survivors between the ages of 7 to 17 and serves approximately 50 children from the Mid-Atlantic region. For more information please see the link below.

Community Programs

This program is delivered throughout the state at senior centers and senior apartment complexes. This interactive program focuses on why seniors are more at risk for burn injury and fire-related death, and the simple steps that seniors can take to prevent burn injury and fire in their home.

This program is delivered at various locations throughout the state, including church groups, community organizations and places of business. This program can be tailored to fit the specific needs of your organization.

The Johns Hopkins Burn Center participates in numerous community, school and employee health fairs throughout the state each year. We focus on providing community members of all ages with burn prevention and fire safety information for their families in an effort to keep the community informed and safe in their homes.

The Safe Babies Program provides burn prevention materials to every new mother who delivers a baby at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. These materials include a bathwater thermometer, electrical outlet covers, a spillproof coffee mug and poison control information, as well as burn prevention and childhood safety information.
