The Robert Altman Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery

Under the leadership of Dr. Mohammad Allaf, the Brady Urological Institute stands among the world’s leading centers for minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Established in the 1990s by Dr. Patrick Walsh, the Brady’s Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), today directed by Dr. Ahmed Ghazi, continues this legacy by advancing surgical precision, expanding the boundaries of innovation, and improving patient outcomes and quality of life. Through pioneering work in surgical education and the integration of cutting-edge technologies—including robotics and image-guided platforms—the MIS Division delivers comprehensive care across the full spectrum of urologic disease, from conditions such as prostate enlargement and kidney stones to complex reconstructive challenges and urologic cancers.
The Robert Altman Division (RAD) of Minimally Invasive Surgery, made possible through a generous $10 million gift from the Robert and Lynda Carter Altman Family Foundation, represents the next chapter in this tradition of excellence. Purpose-built to reimagine the operating room, RAD is dedicated to advancing smarter, safer, and less invasive surgical approaches in urology and beyond—transforming care and elevating outcomes for patients around the world.

About Robert A. Altman

Robert A. Altman was an esteemed attorney, pioneering business leader, and devoted family man, married to the love of his life, Lynda Carter, for nearly 40 years. Robert’s life and influence spanned the Washington legal sector, the global video game industry and beyond with remarkable distinction.
After receiving a bachelor’s degree in political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he then attended George Washington University Law School, where he was editor of its law review and earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1971. Robert remained in D.C. and began his legal career, where he became a trusted advisor and protégé of Clark M. Clifford, counsel and political adviser to Democratic presidents Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Jimmy Carter. Robert quickly distinguished himself as a formidable legal mind and a brilliantly uncompromising litigator, known for his keen intellect, impeccable discretion, and an unyielding devotion to those he represented.
Robert’s early curiosity about gaming - and his belief that it would evolve into an art form on par with television and film - proved prescient during his tenure as CEO and Chairman of ZeniMax Media. Under his leadership, the company grew into a powerhouse of interactive entertainment. As the visionary force behind Bethesda Softworks, Robert helped usher into existence some of the most celebrated, genre-defining franchises in modern gaming, leaving an enduring mark on the industry. Those include the Fallout series (now a runaway hit TV show) and The Elder Scrolls series, and many others that fundamentally changed the world of gaming.
Robert’s leadership was defined not only by his exacting, strategic vision, but by his boundless respect for all forms of art and the creative people behind it. He believed in empowering talented people and doing whatever he could to encourage growth and innovation, leaving an inimitable impression on every organization and individual he touched. Beyond his professional achievements, Robert was deeply committed to philanthropy, supporting causes in healthcare, education, and social justice. His generosity and sense of purpose reflected a profound desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Above all, Robert savored every moment of his life and was fiercely devoted to his wife, Lynda, and his children, Jessica and James. His legacy lives on through his family, his work, and the countless lives he enriched with his wisdom, kindness, and quiet strength.
