Vice President, Patient Safety and Quality at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center

Troy Schmit has more than 30 years of leadership experience in performance improvement, operational excellence, quality and safety. As vice president of patient safety and quality at Johns Hopkins Bayview, Troy serves as a key member of the medical center’s executive team and works closely with the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality. His focus includes eliminating preventable harm to patients, family members and staff; improving clinical and patient-reported outcomes and experience; and building hospitalwide participation in patient safety, quality and service through transparency, collaboration and mutual learning. 

Troy most recently served served as vice president and chief quality officer at Beebe Healthcare in Delaware. In that role, he introduced a robust quality governance structure that spanned from the board to the facilitation of department quality plans and reporting structure. Troy has a proven track record in advancing improvement in quality and safety metrics. He has extensive leadership experience with Lean Six Sigma performance improvement methodologies, as well as strategic planning, systems design and dashboard development.

Troy has also held leadership roles at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Oregon Health & Science University and Providence Health and Services. He holds a master’s degree in health administration from Indiana University and a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University.
