Chief Operating Officer, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center

Danielle Wharton has oversight of Johns Hopkins Bayview’s administrative operations, clinical and ancillary services, support services and facilities, and works closely with physician and administrative leaders to drive operational excellence at the Medical Center.

Danielle began her career at Johns Hopkins Bayview as an administrative resident in 2002. She has served as our vice president of clinical and support services since 2020. In this role, Danielle has led efforts to modernize our campus infrastructure, including the replacement of our laboratory analyzers and pharmacy carousel, as well as our multi-year elevator modernization. She has also been a driving force behind many of our health system integration efforts, including working with the corporate supply chain team to implement the Wavemark supply capture system.

Danielle has honed her leadership skills as she has risen up the ranks at Johns Hopkins Bayview over the past 23 years. After completing her residency, she served as the assistant administrator and director of operations in the Johns Hopkins Bayview Care Center (now the John R. Burton Pavilion). In 2008, she was named director of support services for the Medical Center. She was promoted to senior director in 2012, and to vice president of support services in 2017. With each promotion, Danielle has taken on increasing responsibilities, until her areas of oversight included clinical administrators, emergency management, clinical nutrition, imaging, pathology/clinical lab, rehab medicine, clinical engineering, environmental care services, facilities, food services, parking, transportation, patient transport, public safety and supply chain.

Danielle adds oversight of a number of clinical operations to her current areas of responsibility, including emergency medicine, Department of Medicine, neurosciences, gyn/ob, pediatrics, orthopaedics, oncology, psychiatry, ambulatory services and information services.

Danielle, who first came to Johns Hopkins Bayview as a learner, has a passion for mentorship both in and outside of work, seeing it as an opportunity to positively impact the future of health care. She has served as an advisor to our administrative fellows and as a member of the JHM Administrative Fellowship Advisory Committee. Many current Johns Hopkins Bayview managers and directors consider her a mentor, whether formally or informally. Danielle also completed the Carol Emmott Foundation Fellowship in February. This 18-month cohort consisted of female health care executives from across the nation. As part of her fellowship, Danielle led a community-based project to support our workforce development through a partnership with Dundalk High School that creates a talent pipeline for several of our ancillary and support services.

Danielle received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from George Washington University. She serves as a member-at-large of the National Association of Health Services Executives, as well as a board member for the Baltimore School for the Arts and the Empowerment Temple AME Church. She is also an executive champion for the United Way campaign at Johns Hopkins.
