The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses
Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center is proud to honor its outstanding nurses with the DAISY Award — an international recognition program that celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide to patients and families every day.
Anyone can nominate a nurse — patients, family members, visitors, physicians, staff members and volunteers — by sharing a story of the outstanding care the nurse provided. Each quarter, one extraordinary Johns Hopkins Howard County nurse will be selected to receive the DAISY Award by a committee of peers.
Stroke and Cardiac Care Awards
Primary Stroke Center – Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services
When a person is suffering a stroke, Maryland law requires that EMS ambulances bring the patient to the closest designated Primary Stroke Center. For this Primary Stroke Center designation, MIEMSS standards require hospitals to provide excellent patient care, including rapid assessment by a multi-disciplinary team and the most advanced treatment with clot-busting medications.
Cardiac Interventional Center – Maryland Health Care Commission
Johns Hopkins Howard County has received a waiver from the Maryland Health Care commission to provide interventional treatment for certain heart attack patients through the Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) program. Patients experiencing a certain type of heart attack quickly receive potentially life-saving balloon angioplasty treatment, which opens arteries and minimizes damage to the heart muscle.
American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Awards
Each year, the American Heart Association recognizes hospitals that demonstrate a high commitment to following guidelines that improve patient outcomes

Blood Bank – American Association of Blood Banks and College of American Pathologists
The Johns Hopkins Howard County Blood Bank passed a recent accreditation survey with a perfect score of 100, maintaining accreditation for both the American Association of Blood Banks and the College of American Pathologists.
Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Survey
The HCAHPS survey results reveal an independent, objective look at what patients think about the care they receive at hospitals across the country. The survey offers a snapshot of certain aspects of health care that can serve as a guide to further improvement and monitoring by hospitals, as well as help consumers make informed choices.
Perinatal Referral Center - Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services
Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center is designated as a Perinatal Referral Center. This designation recognizes the breadth and quality of obstetric and neonatal services offered to care for seriously ill pregnant women and newborns. To receive this designation, hospitals must demonstrate capability in providing uncomplicated and complicated obstetrical, neonatal and pediatric care through specific written standards, protocols and guidelines.
