Yazan spent his early childhood years in Yemen before moving to the States. He then grew up in northern VA - he is pumped that he is now only an hour away from home! He studied biochemistry at the University of Virginia (go wahoos!) before attending medical school at VA Tech Carilion. In addition to developing a strong passion for medicine, Yaz worked with the Roanoke refugee and immigrant population to help increase their access to resources and education. He hopes to continue learning more about the various healthcare disparities faced by our diverse patient populations and how we can address them. Outside of medicine, Yaz loves to spend time with friends, watch sports, be outside, and play board games (especially Catan).
Danielle Amundsen, MD

She studied biochemistry at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and participated in the Community Engagement Scholars Program. She attended Johns Hopkins for medical school and continued to explore interests in primary care, community health, and addiction medicine through the Primary Care Leadership Track. She is beyond excited to be Baltimoreans' (of all ages!) PCP at East Baltimore Medical Center (EMBC- an FQHC affiliated with Hopkins) and continue to call Baltimore home. Danielle loves hiking and backpacking, spending time in Baltimore's parks, and caring for her ever-growing collection of plant babies.
Arshia Arora, MD

Miller School of Medicine Career Interests: Hematology/Oncology, Health Equity, Global Health Firm: Janeway Arshia (she/her) was born in India and moved to Minnesota at the age of 10. She grew up in the snowy Midwest before heading to sunny Miami at the University of Miami for her undergraduate education in biochemistry and medical school. There, she found her passion for addressing health disparities while working at a free clinic based in a Needle Exchange Program and at the Human Rights Clinic. She is eager to further develop her interest in oncology, care for Baltimore's vulnerable patients, and learn from her colleagues at the Osler residency program. Outside of medicine, Arshia enjoys hiking, walking/running on the Baltimore harbor, and cooking Indian food.
Dorothy Avoke, MD
Hometown: Accra, Ghana Undergraduate: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Medical School: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine Career Interests: Cardiology, Global Health, Medical Education Firm: Janeway Dorothy was born and raised in Accra, Ghana. Before attending medical school at UNC-Chapel Hill, she had careers as an electrical engineer and then later as a registered nurse. She plans to pursue a career in Cardiology and hopes to continue to explore her interests in global health and medical education. She is excited to join the Osler program and is looking forward to getting to know her co-interns better. Dorothy loves cooking, reading, soccer and spending time outdoors with her husband and two children. She is eager to explore Baltimore and surrounding areas.
Eric Bai, MD, MSc
Hometown: Hacienda Heights, CA Undergraduate: Brown University Medical School: Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University Career Interests: Primary care, addiction medicine, housing advocacy, digital health Firm: Janeway Eric (he/him) grew up on the outskirts of Los Angeles. He studied computational biology in college and worked for a few years in social work and public sector tech before going to med school. As part of the Urban Health track, Eric is looking forward to learning from people both inside and outside of the healthcare apparatus. He's a big fan of plants and being outdoors close to sunlight but not in it.
Anjali Bhatla, MD, MBA
Hometown: Harlingen, TX Undergraduate: Rice University Medical School: Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Career Interests: Cardiology, Public Policy, Innovation Firm: Thayer Anjali grew up in Harlingen, a border town at the southern tip of Texas. She attended Rice University for undergrad where she studied health sciences and policy studies. Her interest in public policy and systems innovation to improve care delivery and improve patient outcomes led her to pursue a MD/MBA at the Perelman School of Medicine and the Wharton School. She couples matched to the Osler residency program with her husband and co-intern, Vivek, and loves the focus the program has on developing clinical excellence. In her free time she enjoys traveling, dancing, and learning how to cook Indian food. She is looking forward to exploring the waterfront and the Baltimore/DC food scene.
Cody Calhoun, MD
Hometown: Columbus, OH Undergraduate: Case Western Reserve University Medical School: Ohio State University College of Medicine Career Interests: Medical Education, Pulmonology & Critical Care Firm: Janeway Cody grew up in Columbus, OH and attended undergrad at Case Western Reserve University where he played four years of varsity football while studying biology. He returned home to attend The Ohio State University College of Medicine where he developed a passion for medical education and an interest in critical care medicine. Cody couples matched with his partner, Leigh, who is a pediatrics intern at Children's National in DC. He is an avid disc golfer and enjoys his free time either outdoors or playing board games with friends.
Alexander Cao Zhang, MD, MSHS

He graduated from The University of Utah with a degree in Biology and obtained a Master's degree with focus in Health Professions Education before attending medical school at Tulane University. Alex is interested in teaching and is looking to pursue a career in academic medicine. Outside of medicine, Alex enjoys cooking, hiking, exploring restaurants and food scenaries around Baltimore, and binge-watching movies and TV shows.
Christopher Chew, MD
Hometown: Orlando, FL Undergraduate: Vanderbilt University Medical School: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine Career Interests: Cardiology, Medical Education, Health Equity Firm: Barker Chris grew up in Orlando, Florida where he fell in love with the outdoors, fishing, and almost any activity on the water. During his time in medical school, he found his interest in Cardiology which he hopes to incorporate with his passion for medical missions. Outside of medicine, Chris can be found standing in line at Chipotle, quoting the Office, solving his Rubiks cube, or pretending that he likes to workout. He's most excited about his new annual Baltimore National Aquarium Membership Pass - he'd be happy to take you on a tour of the jellies!
David Choi, MD, MSc
Hometown: Atlanta, GA Undergraduate: Emory University Medical School: Morehouse School of Medicine Career Interests: Oncology Firm: Longcope David was born in South Korea, but grew up in Wales. Upon moving to the US, he initially lived in Alabama before moving to Atlanta to attend undergrad at Emory University where he majored in Biology. Before embarking on a journey in medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine, he obtained his master's degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology and Physiology at Georgia State University where he nurtured his interests in the molecular biology of cancers. Outside of medicine, David has a passion for soccer (especially Manchester United!) and enjoys spending time with his wife and Pomeranian named Mochi.
Abdallah Elshafeey, MD
Hometown: Cairo, Egypt Undergraduate: None Medical School: Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar Career Interests: Cardiology Firm: Thayer Abdallah was born in Brooklyn, NY but lived most of his life in Egypt. He moved to Canada for high school and shortly after joined Weill Cornell Medicine in Qatar to obtain his medical degree. There, he discovered his passion for technology and its intersection with healthcare. More specifically he is interested in smart wearable devices and their incredible potential in the improvement of cardiovascular health. Outside of medicine, Abdallah enjoys watching and playing soccer and is an avid FC Barcelona supporter. He also enjoys any outdoor activity that involves good company.
Abhishek Gami, MD

He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and attended Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. As a medical student, he conducted research on cerebrovascular disease and utilized his background in engineering for applications in medical innovation and technology. As a college student and medical student, Abhi was drawn to the incredible history, warmth, and support of Johns Hopkins and is thrilled to continue his training in this community. Outside of medicine, Abhi enjoys podcasts, nature, photography, trivia, and trying new bakeries in Baltimore (his favorite is Café Dear Leon).
Deen Garba, MD
Hometown: Greensboro, NC Undergraduate: UNC-Chapel Hill Medical School: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine Career Interests: Global Health, Health Policy Firm: Janeway Deen grew up in scenic Greensboro, North Carolina. Growing up, he spent his summers in Northern Nigeria where he developed an interest in global public health. Deen attended UNC-Chapel Hill for college where he studied Health Policy and Management. Upon graduation, he worked in the Global Health Policy Center at the Centers for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington DC, before ultimately returning to UNC-Chapel Hill for medical school. While at UNC, Deen also spent a year as a Paul Farmer Global Surgery Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School. Outside of medicine, Deen enjoys playing and watching soccer and is an avid supporter of Real Madrid C.F. He also enjoys creative writing, poetry, and cooking West African cuisine.
Paola Ghanem, MD
Hometown: Beirut, Lebanon Undergraduate: Lebanese American University Medical School: American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine Career Interests: Oncology Firm: Thayer Paola was born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon. She went to the Lebanese American University where she majored in biology and later joined the American University of Beirut to obtain her medical degree. After her medical training, Paola moved to Johns Hopkins University to pursue a two-year postdoctoral research training in thoracic oncology and is interested in understanding the determinants of a prolonged response to immunotherapy. She chose the Osler Medical Residency for its rigorous training, supportive environment, the strong sense of belonging and the many opportunities for growth. Outside of medicine, Paola enjoys baking and making bread. Undoubtedly, her favorite part is sharing the food with others. When not at work, you can catch Paola enjoying long walks along Baltimore’s waterfront.
Edward Gomes, MD
Hometown: Brookhaven, PA Undergraduate: University of Pennsylvania Medical School: Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Career Interests: Cardiology, Pulmonary Medicine & Critical Care Firm: Janeway Ed Gomes was born in NYC, but grew up in Bangladesh for the first 8 years of his life. He and his family eventually moved back to the U.S. and ultimately settled in the suburbs of Philadelphia, which he calls home. Ed obtained his undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania and remained at Penn to complete medical school. He chose the Osler Medical Residency for the many opportunities for personal growth and the chance to learn from some of the leaders in medicine. Outside of medicine, Ed loves spending time in Patterson Park and exploring the historical sites in Baltimore and the surrounding area.
Dana Goplerud, MD, MPH
Hometown: Tampa, FL Undergraduate: Brown University; Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Medical School: Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Career Interests: Med-peds primary care, social determinants of health, trauma-informed care Firm: Thayer Dana (she/her) grew up in sunny Tampa, FL and attended Brown University, where she studied biology. She served for two years as an AmeriCorps member at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, where she worked to connect patients with community resources like food, housing, and legal aid. She attended Johns Hopkins for medical school, where she was co-led Hopkins Medicine for Harm Reduction and developed a social determinants of health curriculum. She received an MPH from Hopkins and studied the distribution of air pollution among low-income housing. She is thrilled to stay in Charm City for her med-peds training among a community passionate about health equity and restructuring systems to improve wellbeing for all. Outside of work, she likes baking, dancing, long walks around the harbor, and snuggling with her cat.
Ashley Gordon-Phillips, MD, MPH
Hometown: Houston, TX Undergraduate: Rice University; Emory University Rollins School of Public Health Medical School: University of Texas Southwestern Medical School Career Interests: Urban Health Primary Care, Reproductive health, Public health, Health equity Firm: Barker Ashley grew up in Houston, TX, attended undergraduate at Rice University, where she majored in anthropology and policy studies, and then went on to receive her MPH at Emory University with a focus in behavioral sciences and health education. She spent an additional year at Emory, coordinating a regional HIV prevention research project and coaching minority high school students in public health research. She then received her medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Ashley, her husband, and their two dogs are all very excited to be living in Baltimore right next to the harbor. In her free time, Ashley enjoys trying new restaurants, watching sitcoms, exploring new cities, and--like a true Texan--going horseback riding.
Hussein Hassan, MD
Hometown: Beirut, Lebanon Undergraduate: American University of Beirut Medical School: American University of Beirut Medical School Career Interests: Cardiology, Pulmonary Medicine & Critical Care, Hospital Medicine, Medical Education Firm: Janeway Hussein grew up in a small, rural area in Beqaa, Lebanon. After high school, he moved to Beirut for undergraduate studies in Biology followed by medical studies at the American University of Beirut. Following his graduation from medical school, Hussein moved to Baltimore to pursue a research fellowship at Johns Hopkins duing which he worked mainly on pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure. Hussein loves to catch up with family and friends whenever he gets a chance. He enjoys outdoor activities and never misses a chance to relish traditional Lebanase cuisine. Hussein admires the diversity Baltimore houses, inlcuding the Osler Residency Program at Hopkins.
Kristi Hill, MD
Hometown: Easton, CT Undergraduate: Tufts University Medical School: Harvard Medical School Career Interests: Health Equity, Addiction Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Hepatology Firm: Thayer Kristi (she/her) grew up in Connecticut. She attended Tufts University as an undergraduate, where she studied International Relations with a focus on global health. Kristi discovered her interest in clinical medicine towards the end of her time at Tufts, so after graduation she spent a year at Bryn Mawr College completing her premedical coursework. She then worked in Washington, DC for two years on research on the intersection of hepatitis C and opioid use disorder. She attended Harvard Medical School, where she continued to explore her interests in infectious diseases, addiction medicine and harm reduction. Outside of work, Kristi enjoys hiking, exploring new restaraunts, and running along the water. She is excited about all the cute dogs that live in her neighborhood and aspires to become a dog mom herself.
Sun Young (Sarah) Jang, MD
Hometown: Seoul, South Korea Undergraduate: Johns Hopkins University Medical School: Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Career Interests: Cardiology, Health Equity, Medical Education, Quality Improvement Firm: Thayer Sarah was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. She landed in New Hampshire to finish her last two years of high school at Phillips Exeter Academy and attended Johns Hopkins University where she studied Molecular and Cellular Biology. Sarah obtained her medical degree at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. As a medical student, Sarah was involved in Cardiology research, worked as a part time Korean medical interpreter, and developed interests in health equity, medical education, and quality improvement. Outside of work, Sarah enjoys cooking, baking, walking around different parks, and singing at her church. She is thrilled to continue her medical training at Johns Hopkins as an Osler resident alongside compassionate and brilliant colleagues.
Aamir Javaid, MD
Hometown: Langley, VA Undergraduate: Georgetown University Medical School: University of Virginia School of Medicine Career Interests: Cardiology Firm: Janeway Aamir graduated from Georgetown University majoring in Biology of Global Health and earned his medical doctorate at the University of Virginia. He chose to train in the Osler Medical Residency at Johns Hopkins to provide the best care possible, even for patients with the most challenging and complex conditions. As a researcher, he is passionate about developing and evaluating tools to prevent cardiovascular diseases, with particular interests in digital health, imaging, big data, and artificial intelligence to aid clinical decision-making and improve outcomes. Beyond medicine, his favorite hobby is playing jazz as a tenor saxophonist. He has performed in venues like Blues Alley and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC and Lincoln Center in New York, NY and is a strong believer in the power of music to facilitate healing and social good. When not on the wards, you can probably find him outdoors running, strength training, or trying new restaurants on the water with family and friends.
Adrienne Johnson, MD
Hometown: Middletown, DE Undergraduate: Johns Hopkins University Medical School: Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University Career Interests: Urban health Med-Peds primary care, social determinants/health equity research Firm: Janeway Adrienne (she/her) grew up in Delaware. After high school, she attended Johns Hopkins University where she studied biology and was a member of the women's varsity soccer team for 4 years. A Hopkins she developed a passion for social determinates and disparities in minority communities while working for a non-profit in Baltimore called Thread throughout college and as staff after graduation. She then went to study at Sidney Kimmel Medical College in Philadelphia where she continued to focus on health disparities, diversity initiatives, and equity within medicine. Adrienne hopes to utilize her Med-Peds training to continually advocate for her patients’ best interests across their lifetime and fight for health equity within marginalized communities. Outside of work, she loves soccer and is a Tottenham Hotspur fan, enjoys hiking and camping, and has an ever expanding plant collection. Adrienne is excited to be back in Baltimore for the amazing restaurants, vibrant neighborhood communities, and all the hidden gems throughout the city that give Baltimore its charm!
Madison Kahl, MD
Hometown: Knoxville, TN Undergraduate: University of Tennessee Medical School: University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine Career Interests: General Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Health Policy/Advocacy Firm: Barker Madison grew up in Knoxville, TN. As a true Volunteer, she stayed to attend the University of Tennessee for undergrad, where she majored in Biological Sciences and served as Student Body Vice-President. After college, she worked at a local hospital as a nursing assistant, and her time caring for patients there inspired her to pursue medicine. She moved across the state to Memphis for medical school at UTHSC, where she got involved in her school’s AMA chapter and developed an interest in patient advocacy through health policy. She chose the Osler Medical Residency for its clinical rigor, unique Firm System with ACS mentorship, and the privilege to care for the patients of Baltimore. Outside the hospital, you can find Madison walking along the waterfront, finding live music around town, and scouting out the best crab cake in Charm City.
Daniel Kikuchi, MD
Hometown: Camarillo, CA Undergraduate: Emory University Medical School: Emory University School of Medicine Career Interests: Cardiology Firm: Thayer Daniel (he/him) grew up about an hour northwest of Los Angeles. Following high school, he moved to Atlanta where he completed his undergraduate and medical studies. While at Emory, his interest in cardiac physiology led him to conduct research on the molecular mechanisms of atherosclerotic plaque formation. He chose the Osler Medical Residency for the culture of clinical excellence and collegiality among the residents. Outside of medicine, he enjoys running, hiking, and trying new restaurants.
Yoo Jin Kim, MD, MS
Hometown: Chicago, IL Undergraduate: Johns Hopkins University Medical School: University of Illinois Chicago College of Medicine Career Interests: Cardiology, Pulmonary Medicine & Critical Care Firm: Longcope Yoo Jin was born in Seoul, South Korea, and grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. She attended Johns Hopkins University, where she studied Neuroscience and Spanish before obtaining her master’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Returning home to Chicago, she began her medical training at the University of Illinois Chicago and completed a research fellowship with the Population Health Sciences Program, developing and implementing population-specific programs designed to achieve health equity. Outside of medicine, Yoo Jin loves to travel, explore new restaurants, and find new trails to walk her dog, Vienna!
Katherine Lang, MD
Hometown: Denver, CO Undergraduate: Kenyon College Medical School: Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine Career Interests: Cardiology, Medical Education Firm: Barker Kate grew up in Denver prior to moving to Ohio to attend Kenyon College, where she studied Biology and played varsity lacrosse. After graduating, she became a Certified Nurse Assistant, attended nursing school and worked as an RN on a procedural cardiology unit. She was inspired by the many wonderful physicians she worked with and decided to attend Case Western Reserve University for medical school. Outside of medicine she enjoys running, fly fishing, and being outdoors. She is excited to get to know her amazing co-interns while exploring the food scene and running routes in Baltimore.
Jasmine Malhi, MD

She studied Biophysics & minored in Psychology at Johns Hopkins University. She then returned to Virginia for medical school at the University of Virginia. She is excited to be back in Charm City, working with the diverse community that drew her to medicine alongside her wonderful co-interns. Outside of the hospital, Jasmine loves exploring new restaurants, baking, hiking, and trying new ice cream flavors!
Areeb Masood, MD
Hometown: Austin, TX Undergraduate: University of Texas at Austin Medical School: University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine Career Interests: Urban Health, Primary Care, MedEd, Food Insecurity, Health Policy Firm: Longcope Areeb was born in Bury, England but calls Austin, TX home. He completed his undergrad at The University of Texas at Austin. Prior to med school, he co-founded The Giving Fridge, a non-profit that develops innovative solutions for food insecurity. He studied medicine at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine. During med school, he presented health policy research to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) about the state of food insecurity in border counties and served as Student Government president, where he developed a love for medical education. He was drawn to Hopkins because of both the emphasis on training leaders in primary care and health policy through the Urban Health Track, as well as the commitment to training well-rounded clinicians through the Osler medical service. He moved to Baltimore with his wife who will be a primary care doc at Hopkins. He is an unapologetic Laker and Longhorn, a film photography enthusiast, and will gladly wait in line with you at Canton's beloved Café Dear Leon!
Caya McFalls, MD
Hometown: Minneapolis, MN Undergraduate: University of Wisconsin - Madison Medical School: Drexel University College of Medicine Career Interests: Undecided Firm: Longcope Caya grew up in Minneapolis before moving to Madison, WI where she got her B.S. in Biochemistry and Neurobiology. She then moved to Chicago where she worked at a pharmaceutical company for a couple years before deciding to move to Philadelphia to attend Drexel University College of Medicine. She and her partner have loved exploring Baltimore on foot and can usually be found outdoors (rain or shine) hiking, camping, or sailing. She is very excited to become a part of the Osler family and learn from some of the best!
Omar Mhaimeed, MD
Hometown: Busra al-Sham, Syria Undergraduate: None Medical School: Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar Career Interests: Cardiology Firm: Barker Omar was born in Detroit, MI and moved to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia shortly after, where he graduated high school. He then joined Weill Cornell Medicine- Qatar where he received his medical degree and discovered his passion for cardiopulmonary physiology. He plans to pursue a career in Academic Cardiology, integrating clinical care, research, and medical education in his practice. He hopes to learn about global health to be able to serve globally disenfranchised communities, especially his hometown in Syria. Outside of academics, he enjoys working out, playing and watching all sports (not any Detroit teams after decades of heartbreak), trying different cuisines (especially steaks and milkshakes), and hanging out with friends.
Mackenzie Moon, MD
Hometown: Enon Valley, PA Undergraduate: Pennsylvania State University Medical School: University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Career Interests: Gastroenterology, GIM, Medical Education Firm: Barker Mackenzie grew up in a small town north of Pittsburgh and traveled to the middle of the state to attend undergrad at Penn State University (we are!), where she majored in Biology. She returned home to Pittsburgh for medical school where she fell in love with internal medicine. Outside of the hospital, you can find her spending time outdoors running and hiking, watching the Steelers, or binging reality shows on Netflix. Her favorite things to do in Baltimore are exploring new restaurants and petting other people’s dogs in Fells Point. Mackenzie is excited to be a part of the Osler Medical Residency and the firm of choice (Barker!) and is looking forward to learning and growing with her talented and kind co-interns.
F. Nathalia Morales Delgado, MD
Hometown: Bronx, NY Undergraduate: Columbia University Medical School: Weill Cornell Medicine Career Interests: Primary Care; Obesity Medicine Firm: Thayer Nathalia grew up in El Salvador until the age of 10, when she and her family immigrated to the USA - the (Boogie Down) Bronx, NY. She stayed in NY for undergrad and medical school (Columbia University and Weill Cornell Medine, respectively). After growing up in an underserved community and learning about social determinants of health, and how it affected so many of those around her, she became passionate about pursuing a career in primary care. Her interest outside of medicine include playing with her two dogs Max and Bailey, playing board games or completing puzzles with her husband Patricio, reading fiction books, and exploring restaurants and cafes. Eli Morris, MD
Hometown: San Francisco, CA Undergraduate: Washington University in St. Louis Medical School: Emory University School of Medicine Career Interests: Medicine Firm: Thayer Eli was born and grew up just north of San Francisco. He has been working his way east ever since. He attended college at Wash U, where he studied history and played varsity basketball, and then went to medical school at Emory with two years of research in between. In medical school he had a particular focus on physician burnout and wellness, food as medicine, and global health. Eli chose the Osler Residency program jointly with his wife, who is an ENT intern, due to its devotion to Baltimore, rigorous training, and sense of community. Outside of the hospital Eli loves to read science fiction, bake pies, play volleyball or basketball in the park, or engage in some woodworking (which his neighbors’ dogs do not enjoy).
Vivek Nimgaonkar, MD
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA Undergraduate: Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania Medical School: Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Career Interests: Oncology, Global Health, Innovation Firm: Barker Vivek grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Pennsylvania's Life Sciences and Management Program for college, studying biology and business. Vivek's undergraduate coursework and experiences, including an internship at the Aravind Eye Institute in South India, led to an interest in medical innovation and motivated him to pursue medical school at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine. Vivek couples-matched to the Osler Medical Residency program with his wife, Anjali, and is excited about the program's passion for learning. Outside of medicine, he loves to play tennis and can't wait to try Baltimore's many restaurants.
Hamza Patel, MD
Hometown: Madison, MS Undergraduate: Vanderbilt University Medical School: University of Mississippi School of Medicine Career Interests: Firm: Longcope Hamza was born in Mumbai, India and grew up in the suburbs of Jackson, Mississippi along with his younger brother, Haaris. After high school, he attended Vanderbilt University where he studied chemistry before returning to Jackson for medical school at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. It was during his time there that he furthered his passion for mentorship, diversity, and education. Hamza chose the Osler Medical Residency Program for its emphasis on clinical training and medical education coupled with its supportive and familial atmosphere. He hopes to foster a sense of camaraderie and friendship on any team he works with. In his free time, Hamza is big into social activities, whether it is playing/watching sports or enjoying a movie/game night with friends (will gladly hand anyone an L in a game of Catan).
Caroline Plott, MD, MS
Hometown: Annapolis, MD Undergraduate: Emory University Medical School: Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Career Interests: Health Equity, Primary Care, Preventative Cardiology Firm: Janeway Caroline grew up in Maryland. She moved to studied biology at Emory University, and then completed a master's in human nutrition at Columbia University. She moved back to Maryland to complete medical school at Johns Hopkins. During medical school she engaged in medical education work, research, and advocacy around the role of health systems to promote community health, health equity and healthcare access. She is inspired by the dedication to excellent patient care and energy of the people she works with at Hopkins. Outside of the hospital she can be found hiking, playing music, or learning something new.
Meghan Price, MD
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA Undergraduate: Duke University Medical School: Duke University School of Medicine Career Interests: Oncology, Pulmonary and Critical Care, Palliative Care, Research, Health Equity Firm: Barker Meghan was born in Pittsburgh and grew up around the Philadelphia area with her twin sister and parents. For her undergraduate studies, she moved down to Durham, North Carolina to go to Duke University where she swam on the varsity swim team and majored in Neuroscience with a minor in Sociology. After a year of pursuing clinical research in New York, she returned to Duke University for medical school where she developed passions for both basic and clinical research, medical education, and community engagement projects with a focus on providing resources to food and housing insecure older adults. She is very excited to have couples matched with her partner, Ethan, at JHH and move to Baltimore with him and their two cats. Clinically, she is interested in Oncology or Pulmonary and Critical Care with a focus on incorporating Palliative Care into her future practice. In her free time, Meghan enjoys running, hiking, spending time outdoors, exploring new restaurants with her partner and taking care of her two cats. She thinks the best part about the Osler residency is the tight knit community and longitudinal relationships fostered by the ACS and firm system and is incredibly excited to grow with and learn from her talented, kind, and smart co-interns over the next three years.
Benjamin Reisman, MD, PhD
Hometown: Cleveland, OH Undergraduate: Northwestern University Medical School: Vanderbilt University School of Medicine Career Interests: Physician Scientist Pathway, Hematology Firm: Thayer Ben grew up outside of Cleveland, Ohio and attended Northwestern University where he majored in chemistry and mathematical methods in the social sciences. He went on to earn his MD and PhD in Chemical and Physical Biology at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, completing his thesis research on the mechanism of action of microbial metabolites with anti-cancer activity. His research interests are in chemical biology, hematopoiesis, and hematologic malignancies. Ben chose the Osler program because of the strong sense of community and emphasis on longitudinal mentor, co-resident, and patient relationships provided by the firm system. On short days, you can find him taking the long route home via Baltimore’s free water taxis.
Raquel Sofia Sandoval, MD, MPP
Hometown: Cali, Colombia Undergraduate: University of Pittsburgh Medical School: Harvard Medical School Career Interests: Primary Care Firm: Longcope Raquel Sofía Sandoval is an immigrant from Colombia, who graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2016 and was a 2016-2017 Coro Fellow in Public Affairs. She studied medicine at Harvard Medical School and received her Masters in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She has been a student organizer, creator of anti-racist medical education curricula and health equity researcher focusing on the intersection of COVID, immigration, incarceration/detention, and Latinx communities. She is currently a PGY1 in the Urban Health MedPeds program and plans to go into primary care to take care of the Latinx community, particularly Spanish-speaking families and patients. She loves TikTok and reality TV and hopes to rest and care for herself as much as possible during intern year.
Akshay Sanghi, MD, PhD
Hometown: Ames, IA Undergraduate: Johns Hopkins University Medical School: Stanford University School of Medicine Career Interests: Endocrine, Physician Scientist Pathway Firm: Barker Akshay grew up in the Midwest, and has fond memories of working the corn fields. He completed his Bachelor's degree at Hopkins in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and conducted microbiome research in Richard Cone's Lab in the Department of Biophysics. Akshay went on to earn his MD and PhD at Stanford University, focusing his thesis on elucidating mechanisms of cancer evolution using genomic technologies. He chose the Osler program because it offers an unparalled structure that is focused on resident training. The Program's mentors and colleagues create a community that truly supports residents' career goals. In his spare time, he loves riding bikes and cooking with his wife. He enjoys the fresh produce at local Baltimore markets and is even keeping his own mint plant alive.
Ian Schonman, MD
Hometown: Rockville, MD Undergraduate: University of Michigan Medical School: George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences Career Interests: Community Health, Health Policy Firm: Thayer Ian (he/him) grew up in Rockville, MD prior to attending the University of Michigan (Go Blue!), where he studied mathematics. Before beginning his medical career, he worked in high frequency trading in New York City. While in medical school at the George Washington University School of Medicine, he focused on community health and preventive medicine. Ian is thrilled to join the Osler Residency Program, where he looks forward to working with and learning from his incredible new colleagues. Outside of medicine, you can find him discovering new running trails, supporting the Orioles despite all odds, and scouring the NYTimes Cooking app for the best dessert recipes with his partner, Sarah.
Sarah Schumacher, MD
Hometown: Madison, AL Undergraduate: University of Alabama Medical School: Georgetown University School of Medicine Career Interests: Cardiology, Women's Health, Global Health, Medical Education Firm: Longcope Sarah grew up in Madison, AL. She attended The University of Alabama for her undergraduate degree in biology and minors in business and psychology. Sarah moved to Washington DC for medical school at Georgetown University where she found her passions for medicine, mentorship, medical education, and health equity. She graduated as an MD in the health justice scholar track in 2022. Sarah is very excited to continue her career in the Osler Residency Program and further nurture her passions in medicine. When she is out of the hospital, Sarah loves to travel to new places, attend local concerts, relax by the water (perfect for Baltimore), and scope out the Baltimore food scene!
Soumya Shekhar, MD
Hometown: Naperville, IL Undergraduate: University of Texas at Austin Medical School: Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine Career Interests: Oncology, Medical Education Firm: Barker Soumya grew up in Katy, Texas before attending the the University of Texas at Austin where she majored in Public Health and Biology. Right after college, Soumya biked from Austin, TX to Prince George, BC to raise money for cancer research and support services. She then attended Texas A&M for medical school where she developed an interest in cancer survivorship and GI oncology. Soumya is most excited about the endless learning opportunities and strong community found in the Osler residency. In her free time, Soumya can be found at the gym, walking around the waterfront, or trying every ice cream flavor at Bmore Licks.
Anna Stathopoulos, MD, MPH&TM
Hometown: Berkeley, CA Undergraduate: Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine Medical School: Tulane University School of Medicine Career Interests: Gastroenterology, Medical Education Firm: Barker Anna grew up in Berkeley, California and earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University in New Orleans. She continued her medical training at Tulane where she explored her passions for medical education, addressing health disparities, and wellness in medicine. Outside of medicine, Anna spends her time running, listening to live music, and hanging out with her family and two cats – Calvin and Hobbes!
Rishi Subrahmanyan, MD
Hometown: Lake Oswego, OR Undergraduate: Duke University Medical School: Duke University School of Medicine Career Interests: Firm: Longcope Rishi grew up in Portland, Oregon and attended undergraduate at Duke University where he studied Chemistry and Computational Biology. He stayed at Duke for medical school where he was involved in translational imaging research and developed interests in medical education and global health. Rishi is excited to train at the Osler program and looks forward to the longitudinal relationships afforded by the firm system. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time outdoors, playing basketball, listening to classical music, and refining his geography knowledge on GeoGuessr.
Aaron Sun, MD, PhD
Hometown: Holmdel, NJ Undergraduate: Rutgers University Medical School: University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Career Interests: General Internal Medicine, Medical Tech Firm: Janeway Aaron grew up in Holmdel, NJ and attended Rutgers University for his undergraduate degree in ECE and Chemistry. During his college years he studied organocatalysis as well as pharmaceuticals. He then joined the MSTP program at the University of Pittsburgh where he completed a PhD in Bioengineering with Dr. Rocky Tuan focused on regenerative medicine - specifically nerve and cartilage regeneration. He took some time during his training to delve into software engineering in tech and is looking to pursue a career in academic medicine coupled with medical innovation/technology. Aaron spends his free time rock climbing, coding, and binging random YouTube content. He is excited to tackle residency with his amazing and talented co-interns and looks forward to exploring Baltimore in the years to come!
Olive Tang, MD, PhD
Hometown: Boston, MA Undergraduate: Harvard University Medical School: Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health (PhD) Career Interests: Critical Care, Cardiology, Public Health Firm: Longcope Olive moved to Boston in middle school and stayed in the area through college. She studied molecular and cellular biology, with a minor in psychology. She moved to Baltimore for the MD/PhD program at Johns Hopkins, where she was inspired to pursue her PhD in Epidemiology at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, with a focus on cardiovascular epidemiology. Olive is excited to be an intern with the Osler program. Outside of the hospital, she enjoys hiking by the railroad tracks in Patapsco or spending time at the Book Thing.
Sanjana Verma, MD
Hometown: Clifton, VA Undergraduate: College of William and Mary Medical School: Emory University School of Medicine Career Interests: Critical Care, Medical Education Firm: Janeway Sanjana was born in Florida, but lived in Northern Virginia for 20+ years. She attended the College of William and Mary for undergrad where she created her own major in Molecular Biology and minored in Religious Studies. She then spent a year in Bethesda at the NIH IRTA program before moving to Atlanta, GA for medical school at Emory. While there, she developed strong passions for mental health and wellness in medicine, medical education, and trauma-informed care. In her free time, Sanjana likes to explore the Baltimore food scene, sip on a spicy marg by the water, and befriend her neighbors’ dogs!
Jonathan You, MD
Hometown: Boston, MA Undergraduate: Harvard University Medical School: Stanford University School of Medicine Career Interests: Quality Improvement, Medical Education, Health Equity Firm: Barker Jonathan (he/him) hails from Boston, MA. He studied molecular biology and economics at Harvard College, where he also found a passion for student-led public service and teaching. While pursuing his medical degree at Stanford, he volunteered in community clinics, explored interests in systems thinking and political advocacy, and taught clinical skills and anatomy. Jonathan feels very lucky to have been chosen by the Osler residency, as its culture of care ownership, individualized training, and triumph through teamwork, perhaps best embodied in the firm system, is unlike that of any other program. He is eager to reciprocate the immense kindness shown by the residency and the city of Baltimore itself. Outside of medicine, Jonathan may be found cooking, baking, listening to podcasts, wandering the many neighborhoods of Charm City, working towards his driver's license (with the generous assistance of his natively motorized classmates), and repairing his estranged relationship with the university gym.
Melanie Zheng, MD, MHS
Hometown: Ellicott City, MD Undergraduate: University of Maryland College Park Medical School: Yale School of Medicine Career Interests: Gastroenterology, Transplant, Medical Education Firm: Thayer Melanie (she/her) was born and raised in Maryland. She attended the University of Maryland at College Park where she majored in Biochemistry and minored in Statistics and Philosophy. After 21 years residing in Maryland, she moved to Connecticut, attending medical school at Yale to pursue a joint MD/MHS degree. Deciding that five years as a non-Maryland resident was more than enough, Melanie is extremely excited to be returning and starting residency in the Osler program! Beyond her interests in medical education and internal medicine, Melanie enjoys baking, cooking, trying new restaurants, and thinking about food in general. Her other hobbies include reading, watching Jeopardy, and spending time with family, friends, and her partner Ben.
