The Diabetes Research Program of the Trinidad and Tobago Health Sciences Initiative (TTHSI), led by GIM faculty member Felicia Hill-Briggs, PhD, won the Best Research Poster Award at the 58th Annual Caribbean Health Research Council/Caribbean Public Health Agency (CHRC/CARPHA) Scientific Meeting in Barbados May 2 - 4, 2013. The CHRC/CARPHA Scientific Meeting is attended by health stakeholders from all 19 CARICOM (Caribbean Community) nations.
Dr. Hill-Briggs' winning study reported on development and implementation of a Patient Self-Care Risk Assessment (PSCRA) in routine primary care at a regional public health center in Trinidad with high diabetes prevalence and morbidity. The study identified prevalent socioeconomic and behavioral risk factors for poor diabetes self-management and clinical outcomes in the patient population and led to recommendations for healthcare system-based programs to be implemented by the Ministry of Health.
The Trinidad and Tobago Health Sciences Initiative is a partnership between Johns Hopkins International and the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The Diabetes Research Program is led by Dr. Hill-Briggs. The Johns Hopkins/ University of Maryland Diabetes Research and Training Centre Epidemiology Core, directed by GIM faculty member Dr. Jessica Yeh, also contributed to the project.
