Journalist Samples Several National Healthcare Systems

On August 24, 2009, NPR broadcast "Looking Overseas For 'Healing Of America,"  T. R. Reid's global tour of hospitals and doctors' offices, all in the hopes of understanding how other industrialized nations provide affordable, effective universal health care. Reid, a foreign correspondent for the Washington Post, reports taking his sore shoulder to doctors in several different countries and tells what care is offered to him in each. The full account appears in his book, The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Health Care.

Reid was also the lead correspondent for the 2008 Frontline documentary Sick Around the World, which examined five other capitalist democracies, looking for lessons on health-care delivery.
