On October 8, 2008, the NIH (http://www.nih.gov) announced a change to their policy on amended applications. Beginning with applications submitted for the January 25, 2009 due date, new applications will be allowed only one amendment. Amended applications being resubmitted for the January 25th due date will also be limited to a single resubmission. Henceforth, all applications will be limited to an original and one amended application. Subsequent submissions that are not sufficiently different as to be considered a new application will be withdrawn and not considered.
Applications already “in the pipeline” will be allowed two resubmissions. This policy change applies to applications to all types of NIH programs. The policy changes arise from recommendations of a review board charged with identifying ways to improve the peer review process at NIH. The aim of the policy is to reduce the burden placed on applicants and reviewers and to speed the process of approval for funding.
