Hopkins GIM: What's New

Dr. Lisa Cooper to Receive Nickens Award

Congratulations to the Division's Lisa A. Cooper, the 2006 recipient of the Herbert W. Nickens Award from the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM). This award recognizes exceptional commitment to cultural diversity in medicine. It honors an individual or representative of an organization who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to cultural diversity in medicine and/or to improving minority health. The award is named in memory and honor of the late Dr. Herbert W. Nickens, former Director of the Office of Minority Health, Department of Health and Human Services and the first Vice President and Director of the American Association of Medical Colleges’ (AAMC) Division of Community and Minority Programs.

Dr. Nickens devoted much of his career to establishing programs that address the critical need for training physicians from underrepresented ethnic minority groups. Numerous SGIM members have participated in and benefited from these programs, two of which include the Annual Minority Faculty Career Development Program and the Health Services Research Institute for Minority Medical Faculty. Dr. Cooper will receive the award on Saturday, April 29, 2006 at the 29th Annual Society of General Internal Medicine Meeting in Los Angeles.
