COVID-19 Testing

University Health Services is ordering COVID-19 tests only for those who meet the criteria set by the Johns Hopkins Infection Control - these criteria continue to be updated on a regular basis as the pandemic progresses.  We will use the most current criteria for testing when we assess you over the phone.

If it is determined, based on the criteria, that we will administer a COVID-19 test, it could take up to 24 hours to arrange for the test during the weekday.  If your test is being ordered on a weekend, you will be contacted on the next business day to arrange testing.  Given the demand for tests, it is taking an average of 2-5 days to get back results.

A message for students from University Health Services (UHS):

To our Johns Hopkins students, post-doctoral fellows, house staff, and trainees who use our services:

We would like to let you know that University Health Services remains open and we are here to assist you with your health care needs during this time.

Please call us and do not visit the clinic. We have our nurses screen all patients for COVID-19 before making an appointment or having you stop in.

In most cases, for the safety of our patients and our staff, rather than have you visit the clinic in person, we will plan to utilize telemedicine or phone visits as much as possible.

For example, if you have a fever or symptoms of a respiratory infection (cough, sore throat or shortness of breath), one of our staff will speak with you on the phone and may offer a telemedicine visit if available.

For telemedicine services, we will be using Zoom. We are currently in the process of implementing this platform, and will post an update on our website.

For in-person visits, you may notice that we have fewer staff in the office and that visits may be spaced out. You may also notice that we have rearranged our waiting and staffing areas to promote social distancing.

When you call the clinic, since many of our staff may be working from home, we may ask you to leave a voicemail message and we will be checking these messages and getting back to you promptly to assist with your concern.

We will not be having in-person evening hours during this time.

If you have symptoms and need COVID-19 testing, please call us during business hours, and we will discuss with you whether you qualify for the testing and how to obtain it. Results may take up to 3 days to come back and you will be asked to self-isolate as per CDC guidelines.

At University Health Services (UHS), we are privileged to provide medical, mental health, and wellness services to students, residents, fellows, and trainees on the Johns Hopkins East Baltimore campus, which includes the School of Medicine, the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the School of Nursing, and the Berman Institute of Bioethics. Full-time students, trainees, and their spouses, same-sex domestic partners, and dependent children are also eligible for a comprehensive health insurance program with Johns Hopkins EHP (Student Health Program)Spouses/domestic partners who are on the Student Health Program are also eligible to be seen at the UHS clinic for primary care and mental health services.

 Regardless of whether you are insured through the Student Health Program or elsewhere, students and trainees have access to UHS. There is no charge for clinic visits if you are 1) a full-time, East Baltimore-based student or postdoctoral fellow in the Schools of Medicine, Public Health, or Nursing, 2) house staff or clinical fellow at Johns Hopkins Hospital or Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, or 3) a spouse/domestic partner enrolled in the Student Health Program. However, additional services such as labs, x-rays, and medications will be billed to your health insurance.  

Our health care providers consist of internal medicine physicians, psychiatrists, a licensed psychologist, nurse practitioners (including a women’s health nurse practitioner), and licensed clinical social workers assisted by our clinical and administrative staff. UHS staff will assist you with your medical appointment scheduling, billing and insurance questions. Our team is committed to providing individualized care focused on your health care needs.

For all new patient medical appointments, please call the general center number at 410-955-3250 during our regular hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m). If you already have established care with a UHS primary care provider, please call your provider's number directly.  

For urgent care after hours, please call the main clinic number at 410-955-3250 and wait to be connected to our after-hours nursing service.

For a mental health appointment please call 410-955-1892. You may also reach UHS Mental Health staff by e-mail for non-urgent issues: UniversityHealth@jhmi.edu

For any urgent mental health concerns after hours or on the weekend, please call 410-955-1892 and follow the instructions to speak with a mental health professional. In case of an emergency, go to the Johns Hopkins Hospital Emergency Department or the closest emergency department immediately.

In the case of an emergency or if you are in need of urgent care, go to the nearest emergency room.

Getting to UHS

Walk: UHS is adjacent to the East Baltimore campus.   You can also use Johns Hopkins Walking Escort Services, available 24/7.

Ride Johns Hopkins Shuttles: You can also get to UHS via the Church-Ashland shuttle (Route 12) and we are a short walk from several other shuttle routes.
