About 50 percent of hospitalized patients are age 65 and older, and that percentage will grow each year as the population ages. Suburban Hospital has long valued providing exceptional care to seniors.
In 2011, Suburban earned the NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) designation from The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at New York University College of Nursing. NICHE is the only national geriatric initiative designed to improve the care of older hospitalized adults.
You can watch a video about what we do at Suburban to create a positive hospital experience for elderly patients and their families at the right. To learn more about how Suburban Hospital is training staff to work with older patients, read this article from the Spring 2012 edition of our community newsletter, New Directions.
In addition to the services we provide inpatients, Suburban Hospital offers a host of programs and services in the community to keep our older adult residents healthy and strong. From our HeartWell community-based health promotion initiative, to our support of the Washington Metropolitan OASIS at Montgomery Mall to Senior Shape, Mall Walking and other classes, Suburban Hospital promotes healthy living and disease prevention and management for seniors at convenient times and locations throughout Montgomery County.
Also, our partnership with Potomac Home Support, Inc. and Potomac Home Health Care helps seniors and their families manage their changing needs with skilled services such as nursing, physical therapy, home IV therapy and more.Play Video:
