Since my appointment as President of Suburban Hospital six months ago, I have had the opportunity to learn firsthand what distinguishes this hospital from many others. We stand out not only because of the expertise of our physicians and staff, a strong emphasis on quality and safety and a focus on research and innovation, but also because of our commitment to patients, families and our community. As a practicing physician, I have always believed that the health care system must be designed around the needs of our patients, and not the other way around.

I see Suburban’s dedication to this goal demonstrated in many ways. Our Patient and Family Advisory Council, comprising community volunteers, is helping to shape our policies and processes to be more patient-centric. More than 160 nurses have shown extraordinary leadership and devotion to their patients by pursuing specialty certification. And this past year, our Community Health and Wellness staff ensured that education, clinical services and health screenings were accessible beyond the walls of the hospital, with 2,400 programs that reached more than 100,000 individuals, for a total contribution of more than $20 million. I am so inspired by these wellness initiatives that I plan on volunteering my services to Proyecto Salud this next year and invite each of you to participate in your own way.

I hope you enjoy reading more about our commitment to patients and community in this issue of New Directions. Best wishes for a safe and healthy summer!
