Former Trauma Patients Reunite with Health Care Team Who Cared for Them

Who: Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center

What: National Trauma Survivors Day (May 15) is a day to honor those who have
survived traumatic injuries, and to recognize the strength and courage they have shown in the healing process. We will welcome and pay tribute to two of our recent trauma patients: Brea and Robert Allen.

Brea and Robert were involved in a motorcycle collision in March 2023. Brea was ejected from the motorcycle and collided head-first with another vehicle. She suffered a traumatic head injury, fractures to her spine and jaw, and multiple other injuries. The trauma team in our emergency department stabilized and treated her upon arrival.

Brea was transferred to an intensive care unit and underwent multiple procedures to repair her injuries. During this time, she learned she was seven weeks pregnant, which increased the level of care during her hospitalization. Brea continued to progress with physical, occupational and speech therapy, and after 46 days in the hospital was discharged to an inpatient rehabilitation center.

Robert, a longshoreman at the Port of Baltimore, was also ejected from the motorcycle and had to be extracted from another vehicle. He suffered multiple fractures, resulting in paraplegia. Upon arrival to the emergency department, Robert was immediately taken to the operating room to stabilize his injuries. He was then transferred to the surgical intensive care unit (SICU), where he was sedated and placed on a ventilator. After 44 days in the hospital and significant improvement in his condition, Robert was discharged to an inpatient rehabilitation center.

Brea and Robert currently reside in Joppa, Md., with their three young children. They will be available for interviews after the event.
