St. Petersburg, Fla. – Sept. 13, 2023 – The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) recently designated Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital's Neonatal ICU (NICU) as a Level IV NICU. The hospital is the only AHCA-designated Level IV NICU in Pinellas County and one of only a few in the Tampa Bay region.

For more than a decade, Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital's NICU has met all of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) criteria for Level IV NICU designation—the highest level of care. After AHCA expanded its highest NICU classification from Level III to Level IV in 2022, Johns Hopkins All Children’s applied for and received the highest designation.

Level IV NICUs are able to provide the most advanced medical and surgical care for newborns and premature infants. These facilities are equipped to care for complex neonatal conditions and the smallest and sickest of newborns, like Charlotte and Jett, who were born at 23 weeks, weighing just over a pound each.

“Our latest designation from AHCA reflects the high quality multidisciplinary care provided every day to the babies and families in our NICU,” says Linda Van Marter, M.D., M.P.H., director of the Maternal, Fetal & Neonatal Institute. “It is truly a team effort, with the entire multidisciplinary NICU team working together with many other pediatric specialists who play a role in our patients’ care to deliver excellent outcomes for our patients.”
