WHAT: Johns Hopkins will host a global health summit with leaders in government, industry and cancer medicine to discuss urgent action and collaborations on the Cancer Moonshot and launch of a Lancet Oncology Commission Report on sub-Saharan Africa.

Leveraging lessons learned from COVID-19, new opportunities have emerged to accelerate global health collaborations and collective action in the United States and internationally. Recent findings by a Lancet Oncology Commission show a growing cancer emergency in sub-Saharan Africa, with projected cancer deaths of over 1 million per year by 2030. The need for coordinated global health action is even more crucial given the underlying disparities in cancer incidence and mortality, including in the United States. Statistics continue to show that African Americans have a higher overall death rate from cancer than any other racial or ethnic group in the United States.  

TOPICS INCLUDE: President Biden’s Cancer Moonshot and strategies for international engagement to curb growing cancer trends in Africa and around the world; use of telehealth and new technologies such as artificial intelligence and virtual reality; drug delivery drones to improve access to care; international, multicenter clinical trials; collaborative global oncology education models; and special recognition by survivors of cancer of champions in the fight against cancer and in advancing health equity, including: Otis Brawley, M.D., NFL Hall of Famer Calvin Johnson and Rose Anorlu, M.B.Ch.B., M.P.H., president of the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer.
