Carolyn Carpenter, M.H.A., F.A.C.H.E., has been named president of the National Capital Region (NCR), for the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS). In this newly created role, Carpenter will lead all hospital-based and community-based ambulatory sites across the NCR on behalf of Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), including Sibley Memorial Hospital and Suburban Hospital.

Carolyn Carpenter, M.H.A., F.A.C.H.E., has been named president of the National Capital Region (NCR), for the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS). In this newly created role, Carpenter will lead all hospital-based and community-based ambulatory sites across the NCR on behalf of Baltimore-based Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), including Sibley Memorial Hospital and Suburban Hospital. She will be responsible for the strategic growth and operational performance of all current and future JHM entities and initiatives within the NCR which encompasses Washington, DC, and the adjacent counties in Maryland and Northern Virginia. The effective date of her appointment was August 24, 2020.

“This role is integral to our ability to execute our strategy for the National Capital Region, which includes areas anchored by Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC, and Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland,” says Kevin Sowers, M.S.N., R.N., F.A.A.N., president of the Johns Hopkins Health System and executive vice president of Johns Hopkins Medicine. “Carolyn will lead the coordination, integration and optimization of the Johns Hopkins Health System's delivery system in the NCR and will oversee the development of access points to meet the clinical needs of the region.”

In her new role, Carpenter will serve as a key member of the JHHS senior leadership team, participating in long-range strategic planning activities, working closely with clinical, academic and business leadership to ensure the organization provides high-quality outcomes, exceptional experiences and optimal value for patients and families, according to Sowers.
Carpenter brings 25 years of health care administration leadership experience to her new role. She most recently served as the president of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and corporate vice president for Sentara Healthcare in Virginia, with executive oversight for Sentara’s cancer network, cardiovascular service line and pharmacy services. 

Prior to joining Sentara, Carolyn had a successful, 20-year career with Duke University Health System. During her tenure, she held several roles including chief operating officer for the system’s flagship, Duke University Hospital, as well as associate dean and administrator for the Duke Cancer Institute and as associate vice president of Duke Health.
She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and earned her master’s in health care administration degree from the Medical College of Virginia.
