The need for blood is critical this time of year, especially with winter weather and illness making it difficult to maintain a sufficient blood supply. Blood and platelet donations are urgently needed to so that patients can continue to receive life-saving treatments.

Johns Hopkins Bayview is hosting an American Red Cross blood drive February 20-22, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Knott Conference Center. All participants will receive a meal coupon, parking pass and special gift from the Medical Center.

Eligible donors can make twice the difference by scheduling a “power red” donation. During this type of donation, a machine separates the red blood cells from other blood components and returns the remaining components back to the donor. By doing this, the machine is able to double the amount of red cells it would normally collect in a standard blood donation. Donors are actually donating two units of blood, instead of one, and saving twice the number of lives.
