In a move to address a growing need for integrated regional health care services for patients, officials of Sibley Memorial Hospital and The Johns Hopkins Health System Corporation have completed and signed documents on November 1, 2010, officially integrating the Washington, D.C.,-based Sibley Hospital into the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS).

Under terms of this transaction, which does not involve any financial exchange, Sibley has become a wholly owned subsidiary corporation of JHHS and a member of Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM). Sibley will retain its commitment to the local community and members of the existing medical staff, along with its name, current leadership and board of trustees. The hospital will now have access to the significant research and clinical programs at Johns Hopkins.

The formal signing followed what officials at both institutions agreed was an unusually efficient and smooth due diligence process, which will likely speed development of integrated regional health care services for patients.      

JHHS and its affiliates, including The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center Inc., Howard County General Hospital Inc., and Suburban Hospital, along with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, make up Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Under terms of the integration, Sibley will retain its voluntary medical staff and physician organization. In addition, Sibley will operate under the JHHS governance structure, in the same manner as The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Howard County General Hospital and Suburban Hospital.

According to Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System President Ronald R. Peterson, partnering with Sibley is a strategic, as well as a philosophical, decision. “Sibley is strong financially, very highly regarded in its community and located in the nation’s capital,” he says. “Having it as part of the Hopkins family provides us the critical mass to better position ourselves to provide an integrated, regional approach to care, which we anticipate the future will demand.”  Peterson is also executive vice president of Johns Hopkins Medicine.
