Pranita Tamma, M.D., M.H.S. has received the 2017 Pediatric Scholarship Award from the Society of Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) for her contributions to the study of antimicrobial resistance and for her antimicrobial stewardship, under the mentorship of Sara Cosgrove, M.D.

Tamma is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her research focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of multidrug-resistant gram-negative infections in both children and adults. She is currently funded by a National Institutes of Health K23 award to improve the diagnosis of multidrug-resistant bacteria. In addition, she is the co-principal investigator on a large contract from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to enhance antibiotic stewardship activities in acute care, long-term care and ambulatory-care facilities across the United States.

Tamma has been the director of the Pediatric Antimicrobial Stewardship Program at The Johns Hopkins Hospital since 2012. In this role, she assists clinicians with optimizing the administration of antibiotics, developing guidelines for the appropriate and judicious use of antibiotics, and monitoring patient outcomes after implementation of these practices.

Of the Pediatric Scholarship Award, she says, “I am very honored to have received this award, and I know it would not have been possible without my always supportive mentor and friend Sara Cosgrove.”

Cosgrove, current SHEA president, presented Tamma with the award and called her mentee “a superstar.”
